These are open back phones, however there is very little leakage from outside influences and this allows the resulting sound to be very open and natural. The large motors contribute to a solid bass that never gets muddy and mids that never get harsh although they (mids) might be down a db around 400hz, which isn't a bad thing. The "muffs" cover the ears completely and comfortably and seem to seal well. Defining "pure" sound has always been a holy grail with audio enthusiasts; however, I personally think the term transparent works equally as well and describes the experience with these phones. Sound as close to what the engineers heard in the studio is what we all strive for and these sound as good (and better in some cases) that I've heard in the studio. I'm a keyboardist/composer and ... Easily the best set of headphones I've ever owned but I haven't spent this much money on a pair so that is part of the reason. Very comfortable, easy to wear for extended periods of time and the sound "leakage" is not so loud that it would be a nuisance to others unless the room was completely quiet otherwise. Sound itself is exactly as desired as a reference headset that is flat. I want to hear the music as the musicians intended - no extra bass, treble or mid-range. I can always use an EQ if I want to adjust. So glad I made this purchase. Easily the best set of headphones I've ever owned but I haven't spent this much money on a pair so that is part of the reason. great headphones
these are excellent headphones. they are refurbished, but aside from one very very incredibly minor visual defect, I would not be able to tell they aren't new. also they are better than my previous headphones (beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro) by a surprisingly large margin, in both sound quality and comfort. The only reason to not get these is if you need something really durable.
