I am an avid war movie and documentary collector and saw a trailer for The Hunters on another DVD featuring the same 'period style' (1958) pomp and vigor. There are very few F86 Sabres still flying today and this movie features plenty of great flying scenes with many of the now famous jets in formation. The enemy fly reasonably convincing Mig-15's (F-84's) to provide aviation buffs a wry smile. Special effects (of the time) include models/miniaturization and in studio cockpit shots but were done very well. The plot is classic war/romance with a good dose of tension to keep it moving along at a nice pace however it is a little slow in the beginning as the characters are built. Overall I really enjoy this movie, Robert Mitchum does a fine job as the lead with a very young Robert Wagner, whose character transforms from an annoying and dangerous lack of respect for authority to a 'good guy' at the end. His emerging hip and cool language made me laugh a few times. A welcome addition to my collection.Read full review
