When I first heard of American Vampire, it intrigued me. I'm tired of the Twilight vampires, to be honest, because vampires were never romantic. Erotic, perhaps, but never truly romantic. Not someone I'd want to marry. The classic vampire is the one cursed by his or her condition. American Vampire returns the classic deadly villain to its original allure and mystery. I had been reading Scott Snyder's work on Batman, and I found out that he was publishing his own series that was actually very well reviewed. I decided to check it out. I picked this up and flipped through it a bit in the store one day, and decided I'd look up Volume 1 before I spoiled it for myself. I don't regret it. Volumes 1 and 2 start out with an incredible interweaving of history and the story of the birth of a new breed of vampire in America. Volume 3 takes that story out of the range of about 1880-1920 into the 1940s. I ordered Volume 3 and took it on a two hour flight with me. By the time we were descending, I had finished. The funny thing about the American Vampire series is that you end each book with a craving for more, just like the vampires you read about. Okay, that was a terrible joke, but don't let that discourage you. This is an incredible comic. Scott Snyder collaborated with Stephen King in some of the earlier stories, but comparing the work of the two, I actually prefer Snyder. He has an amazing gift for storytelling. Bottom line, I can't recommend any of these books enough.Read full review
