The WD800JD Western Digital drive can be used to build a computer from the ground up. Alternately, you can use it to repair or upgrade an existing laptop or desktop. It is compatible with any free standard drive bay. You can also put the WD800JD-75MSA3 into a storage enclosure and use it as an external hard drive.These Western Digital drives have a spindle speed of 7200RPM. The spindle speed or RPM represents how fast a drive can read and write data. The external data transfer rate is 300 Mbps. Its internal transfer rate is 93.5 Mbit/s. The quick external transfer of these WDC drives allows you to quickly save or access stored data. The internal transfer allows your system to operate more efficiently. If you're using this WDC WD800JD-75MSA3 as an external device rather than an internal one, it means quick file transfers.The Western Digital Caviar SE has a storage capacity of 80GB. This gives it plenty of space for your important data. Its 8MB buffer size balances low latency with relieving the burden of the CPU. That allows your WDC SATA hard drive to operate efficiently. The dimensions of 7.4 inches by 7.3 inches 3.9 inches make the hard drive compact and suitable for a desktop drive bay. If you choose to slip it into a case for external use, it will be easy to carry.     Used WD Caviar hard drives are very cheap and seem to last forever.

    These old used 80GB WD Caviar drives are a great value. They seem to be very durable and have a very long life span. I've never seen one fail. Many times I've picked up Gov-surplus PC's with no hard drive. I just get on eBay and pick up one of these old Caviars for $10 USD or less. I pop it in, reinstall Windows and we are off to the races. I've done the same thing with old PC's with crashed Maxtor drives. To be exact, if I bought a used PC with a working Maxtor drive, I would swap it out for a WD Caviar. These things are built like tanks and last forever.

    Reviews for Western Digital Caviar SATA WD800JD 80GB

    I like the small size. I have bought more than 500 GB worth of these drives to use as archival media for old home movies I recently digitized. I consider hdd technology superior to tape, cd/dvd, etc. as long as they are stored properly, but I still didn't want to put all my eggs in one basket a la 500+ GB drive. It loads much faster than the old IDE primary that was in the PC I serviced. Where as it took about 5 minutes at least for the PC to load up XP and the desktop it now takes a total of about 30 seconds (using SATA I setting). Loads up applications on the drive much faster as well. WD drive. =) The size may be a problem with Vista, my XP Home Ed. uses about 40-GB my XP-Pro uses a 80-GB..and my new Vista OS uses a 80-GB..for Vista a larger drive is possible.

    Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD 80 GB

    Although the hard drive is a well made product; I recommend not buying this for anything more than a basic email machine. The had drive yields about 72GB of actual space. Add in a Windows O/S and Anti-Virus with updates and that leaves you in the neighborhood of 50GB. I can use up that or most of it adding Java, Messenger, Flash, Decent photo editing software and a few other programs.

    Solid performance for under 20 bucks!

    Had a computer with a dying HDD. Intended to repurpose the rig as a media hub where everything would be streamed to it. Since space wasn't an issue, 80 GB was perfect. The price was right and when it came, I installed an OS to it, plugged it in and it works flawlessly. Drive access speed wasn't phenomenal, but it certainly gets a B+ despite being a used hard drive.
