Reviews
I suspect that most teachers of the baroque period will know and recommend the volume. It reads well, and given the space, it manages to offer some detail on the music selected for attention., "This text covers the basics with clarity and efficiency."--Charles E. Brewer, Florida State University"Music of the Baroque is beautifully written. I'd recommend the text and its accompanying anthology by praising the clarity of the writing style, the English translations, the boxes in every chapter, the diversity of the material, and the extraordinary attention to musical detail. It offers an excellent introduction to the major composers, styles, and genres of the Baroque period."--Alexis Luko, Carleton University

Synopsis
Music of the Baroque , Third Edition, and its accompanying anthology of scores offer a vivid introduction to European music from 1600 through 1750. Integrating historical and cultural context with composer biography, music analysis, and performance practice, the text surveys Baroque music while analyzing in depth more than thirty works from the principal traditions of the period. It also places special emphasis on the evolution of instruments and performance practices, showing how the period shaped them into what we know today. Organized by chronology and genre, the third edition expands the discussion of social and cultural issues through new sidebars on women in music, gender and the castrato voice, the relationship of music to ethnicity and colonialism, and other key areas of study. Also new are contemporary perspectives, including writings by composers Caccini and Couperin and critics Artusi, Scheibe, and Burney. Visit the companion website at www.oup.com/us/schulenberg for a discography of the scores included in the anthology (with links to online recordings), sample worksheets, and supplementary musical scores, This textbook is a concise survey of European music from 1600 through 1750 and is designed for junior/senior level courses in Baroque music. These are the centuries of the composers Palestrina, Monteverdi, Schütz, Lully, and Bach - years that saw the culminating development of the polyphonic motet and madrigal, the invention of opera and oratorio, and the emergence of such instrumental genres as sonata, suite, and concerto, key forms in which composers have continued to write to the present day. The text features a survey of Baroque vocal music organized by chronology and genre, followed by chapters on keyboard music and instrumental music, and an epilogue on the gallant style that emphasizes the continuation of that tradition into what we call the Classical style. The text balances historical context with musical analysis, emphasizes interpretation and the music's historical performing practices, and provides concise definitions of terms and basic explanations of key theoretical issues. The author's website includes a discography there for the scores included in the anthology., This textbook is a concise survey of European music from 1600 through 1750 and is designed for junior/senior level courses in Baroque music. Seller handles a massive inventory so I give them grace on the slow processing and shipping. They were very communicative and prompt with their response when I messaged in asking about it. Book was in good condition as described. Small ding on the page edges which wasn't mentioned, but that's fairly common even at your typical book store. Still a good value and I'd buy from them again.

The first item arrived with some damage to the inside back cover, but the seller responded immediately, assuring me they’d provide a replacement, and even told me I could keep the original. They were upfront about a short delay, and gave a clear estimated ship date, and followed up right on time once it shipped. The replacement arrived in perfect condition and exactly as described. I really appreciated their transparency and professionalism. Would definitely buy from them again!
