I had been using GlobalSat BU353 since 2014 connected to my notebook and a chart plotter software. I had sail more than 10.000 nm with its help, and it had been reliable and accurate all the way, as well as easy to install and set. Now I 've just bought my own! Good product. Happy with my purchase.

I ordered this after several hours of researching the best USB GPS receivers for automobile computers. After reading all the posts on various carputer forums raving about these units I went for it and was not disappointed. I built a 1.86GHz AOPEN digital engine carputer with a 120GB SSD and 4GB of RAM in a fanless 6" X 6" case running Win 7 Ultimate. This Power house micro sized carputer really packs a punch and the GPS puck was the perfect solution to add NAV to my system. It is displayed to a 10.4" touchscreen and the audio goes out to a 5 channel JL audio 750 Watt amp. 4 channels deliver 50Watts to the 2 front and 2 rear 6 1/2 inch BOSE full range speakers and the remaining 550 watts drives the 12 JL boxed sub. It was my first ever carputer so I went all out. The touchscreen frees you from a keyboard and mouse and the front end software easily lets you select between NAV, Audio, Video, PC with a touch of the screen. I have a silicone bluetooth keyboard that rolls up and stores in the glovebox just incase I need to do some serious typing and an iHome wireless laser mouse. The Dual head unit is also bluetooth so everything tethers together seemlessly. Internet is also provided by tethering to my cellphones unlimited data plan and also functions as a hands free. People freak when they see the system. It's in my 96 Maxima I owned since 1999 with only 93,000 original miles. I just finished hand restoring the entire car to like new including porting and polishing everything 5mm over. The carputer also connects to the Nissan consult port for engine control and diagnostics. By setting offsets to ignition timing fuel maps and rev limiter you can go from econo car to street racer with a few taps of the touchscreen. Anyway, If you are planning to add GPS NAV to your system this rugged little puck is the way to go. The accuracy is down to 5 meters and speed to 1KPH. I use it with Microsoft streets and trips 2010 and Delorme 2010 and it works perfect with both apps and any others that use the standard GPS signaling formats. All I have left to do now is paint her and she's done. I'm waiting til spring time so she's riding raw in primer for the winter. I don't run it much in the winter anyway. If anyone has any questions about custom carputers feel free to contact me at geokohler (at) gmalL (dot) com (Just format it right.lol I will be happy to share the wealth of information I gathered along my way to building the ultimate carputer system. I have a Deans List BS in Computer Science and have run my own Shop since 1984 repairing every type of computer and electronic components imaginable and I've figured out how to do some real trick stuff. I'm retired now at 44 basically so I have plenty of time to help you out with your project. Keeps my mind sharp. You are sure to enjoy your BU-353 SirF III GPS dongle so don't even hesitate to snag one. I was impressed by the solid wieght and construction of the little devil. Definitely built to last. Bought this unit to replace a Delorme LT-20 and use with Delorme Street Atlas 2008 and Delorme Topo 7.0. The LT-20 lasted 2 years on my hood, not weatherproof, finally died. The Globalsat BU-353 performs as well as and sometimes better than the Delorme. Fast fix on your location, especially if you have already used it that day. It re-acquires almost instantly. The built in magnet and weatherproof design is perfect for your car roof or dashboard. I use a 6 foot USB extension cord for flexibility. Included software and drivers install easily. I have now used the Globalsat BU-353 daily for 2 months. No problems to report, only praise. Worth every penny. Once you use your laptop with a GPS bug on your roof, all those dash mount turn-by-turn units seem small and amateur. Matched with Delorme software, I am never lost and can plan a major, multi-stop day with ease.Read full review
Can't complain about this at all! I had a cheaper USB GPS receiver (@$25) and while it worked well when mounted to my trunk deck, I wanted it inside to be out of sight. Problem is that my deeply tinted windows blocked all signal. I had heard that the Globalsat BU-353 had a high sensitivity and was more likely to be able to see through the tint and get a signal. I saw the deal on this one and had to give it a shot. Very impressed! While the older receiver pulled in 5-7 satellites outside the car, it pulled in zero inside the car. The Globalsat BU-353 ALWAYS pulls in 7-9 satellites outside the car, and when mounted on my rear package shelf behind 20% tint, it still consistently pulls in 5-9 satellites. This allows me to get excellent GPS signal without junking up the outside appearance of my car with a dorky antenna that could easily be damaged or ripped off. The deal and the quick shipping make it even more enjoyable!Read full review
Hello! Great product with a very specific use! I bought it because I got a navigation software, and needed a usb GPS receiver for my laptop. I bought this product, and I didn't regret! This product is very easy to use and it's very useful. So far I realized that signal is more than enough for normal functioning of navigational system. One of big advantages (as I see it) is that this is not a small usb receiver (such as those that look like usb sticks) but this one comes with a long cable, long enough so you can place receiver somewhere (if needed) where signal from satellite can be received better. Yes, I would definitely buy another one of these if I needed it. PS. Truth is that this is my first (and only) usb GPS receiver, so my review might not be most appropriate, but I'm more than satisfied with product I bought. Best regards, Davor!Read full review
