Taut spy thiller from the 60's that has been too-long unavailable on DVD. While wildy divergent from the Len Deighton bestseller of the same name, it is an enjoyable ride that helps give faces to the characters of the Deighton novel. Harry Palmer, the name given to the hitherto nameless main character of the novels is an "everyman" that works under duress for a super-secret british intelligence agency called the W.O.O.C.(P). Some of Britain's most brilliant scientists are disappearing, then reappearing with their memories wiped clean. Palmer is on the case, and the ride begins. Palmer suffers brainwashing himself, and finally manages to solve the thing and oversee the arrest of the culprit (his boss...Dalby) is a series of double and triple crosses.. Michael Caine was the perfect choice for the horn-rimmed glasses wearing Palmer. His portrayal of Palmer was subtle and perfectly understated. It has been said that Deighton had Caine in mind when he wrote the novels, should they ever be made into films. Caine went on to portray Palmer in two other adaptations of Deighton novels, (Funeral in Berlin and Billion Dollar Brain). He also resurrected the character in a couple of later movies (made in the 80's over twenty years after the originals) not taken from Deighton novels and interesting only in the opportunity to see an older version of Palmer. I won't spoil it by giving away any plot nuiances. If you are a fan of 60's spy films, this is a must see.Read full review
I've looked forward to seeing this film on DVD which I saw as a teenager when it was released. It's powerful score, quirky camera work, Caine's classic sarcasm, and the fact that the film is populated with actors from the Sean Connery perido James Bond universe still makes it a winner.

How can you not like Michael Caine? The Ipcress File fits into the 1960s international spy genre perfectly. Caine at his earliest, when he was more known as Micklewhite. Great entertainment. A true sleeper. (Also check out “A Shock to the System”).
