John Wayne (Rooster Cogburn, The Train Robbers, The Cowboys, Big Jake, etc) stars as tough cattle baron John Chisum in one of his better late-era (1970) Westerns. Chisum fights con artists, horse and cattle thieves, and a corrupt town official - played by Forrest Tucker (tv series F- Troop season 1 & 2, Daniel Boone season 4 & 5, and was in SANDS of IWO JIMA with Wayne in a big hit). Somehow even Billy the Kid (Geoffrey Deuel) gets into the action here also, as Chisum trys to bring peace to the town and keep his cattle ranch intact. The movie is based loosely on Chisums actual ranch in New Mexico prior to his blazing the Chisum Trail and driving cattle to market. Ben Johnson also co-stars in this movie as the Duke's mumbling sidekick as he does in many westerns (The Undefeated, etc). Andrew V. McLaglen is the director here and directed more than a few of Wayne's westerns (The Undefeated, CaHill, U. S. Marshall, etc.) and does a masterful job with this one. He also directed many big stars in other movies (The Wild Geese (Richard Burton), The Devils Brigade (William Holden), Hellfighters (Wayne), etc) to show his total ability on the directors chair. Really a great movie that Classic Western movie addicts will love, devotees of westerns and actions will also enjoy the action here as plenty of fighting, shooting, and cattle stampedes are included. Good for a complete night of entertainment for sure.Read full review
You absolutly cannot go wrong with a John Wayne movie, and this one will not disapoint you. If you have not ever seen Chisum before, you are in for a treat. Although LOOSELY based on true facts, it is a must see John Wayne movie. The Lincoln Country wars were true history facts that happened in New Mexico. This is a story that is inter-twined through this history. Without diving into New Mexico history, I just don't know how much of these facts are true. But it is still a wonderful movie that will be treasured and cherished for the John Wayne fans out there. This is a movie that honestly I could watch every two weeks and not get tired of it. Get the popcorn ready, sit back, and enjoy. Sue L.
