A film well worth watching and purchasing.
I am an art teacher who believes in multidisciplinary approaches to teaching how and why people produce the art that they do and why styles change with the politics and happenings of the times. I use video from many areas in time to help my students get an inkling of the thought processes and people who might have lived in the period. I make it clear that is the film industries version of the life and times, but it still can give a better perspective then they can receive from their own small experience and that of the environment in which they live. I had this video several years ago and used it in my art classroom to help my students to understand as much as possible the struggles that people went through, how and what behaviors were expected at the time from both the black and white ... I lent this to one of the Social Studies teachers who have passed through our school and they loved it so much that it never came back when they moved away. I have not been able to find it locally since it left. Sidney Poitier gives a wonderful performance in this video along with the all of the other well chosen actors to show how the struggle for equal education was a well fought battle. It is necessary to teach our children about our past, how it influences our now and our future. We need to look at the unpleasant ways others treat others so that we do not go down that road again or in some instances denial that it ever happened. We then look at and study the art, music, and various lifestyles of the the time, so that we get a better perspective of the time. Yes, history can be taught through art education, as well as, studio production pieces. I feel this type of education can and does help my students find their own voice in what they produce. Plus it also gives then knowledge which helps them become the good responsible adults we need in society.

Most made-for-t.v. movies prior to 1980 were not of the best quality. Firstly, the networks did not feel they should put lots of money into these projects. Secondly, the best acting was not generally available at this time as most film stars tended to look down on television work. The unions, bigger budgets, higher production values and a larger pool of talent to select from changed all that. This 2-hour movie simply tell the behind the scenes look as N.A.A.C.P. attorney, Thurgood Marshall(Sidney Poitier) successfully pleads the case before a hostile court which only comes around to the proper way of thinking after a long, sometimes contentious, behind -the- scenes battle.
