BALL OF FIRE opens with a group of eight mild-mannered professors who are hard at work compiling an encyclopedia. Work is dull but progressing well until language expert Bertram Potts (Gary Cooper) realizes his section on slang is outdated. For research he ventures into the outside world, where he encounters nightclub singer Sugarpuss O'Shea (Barbara Stanwyck), who, thanks to her mobster boyfriend, Joe Lilac (Dana Andrews), needs a place to hide out. The professors are only too happy to have a woman living among them, and the brassy singer teaches them more than slang, in the process livening up their academic lives with nylons and conga lines. Potts becomes infatuated with Sugarpuss, but when Joe wants her back, things get complicated. A lively romantic comedy with top performances from Cooper, an Oscar-nominated Stanwyck, and a terrific cast of supporting actors, the film also features Gene Krupa and His Orchestra. Billy Wilder and Charles Brackett were nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Story. Hawks went on to remake the film in 1948 as the musical A SONG IS BORN, starring Danny Kaye.

Ball of Fire Reunites Gary Cooper & Barbara Stanwyck
Gary Cooper plays boring Professor Bertram Potts, one of 8 boring professors working on a new encyclopedia while teaching at the local university. When they realize that their entries for slang appear outdated, Potts is elected to research the field in the local area. In a night club, Potts meets Sugarpuss O'Shea (Barbara Stanwyck), the popular singer of the club, who belts out "Drum Boogie." Although Barbara Stanwyck does not really sing the song, she performs the moves quite well. The song is performed by Gene Krupa and his band and later he himself reprises the song using just matchsticks and a matchbox. It is quite a sight to see. Since Sugarpuss is running from the police because of her entanglement with mobster Joe Lilac (Dana Andrews), she volunteers to work with Potts on the ... She disappears onto the university campus and soon becomes involved with all of the 8 professors in their search for current slang. Thus, this movie has been likened to a play on Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; and Potts becomes Prince Charming, when he thinks that he has fallen in love with Sugarpuss. But Joe Lilac is not about to give up on Sugarpuss because as his wife she would not be able to testify against him. And thus, the love triangle begins. Surprisingly, this movie was nominated for 7 Oscars in 1941--Best Actress, Best Music, Best Scoring, Best Sound, Best Recording, Best Writing, and Best Original Story. It won none. Gary Cooper shows his range here as he is the youngest of the boring professors. Barbara Stanwyck, as usual, is a vamp. This movie is not great, but it is worth watching to see the love triangle play out with the intervention of the 7 dwarfs--errrrr 7 university professors.

Screw Ball Comedy
I love this movie. Looking back at Barbara Stanwyck's career, I have to say her screw-ball comedies are some of my favorites. Though no doubt her abilities as an actress are unconquerable in many of her more serious rolls, it is her performance in Ball of Fire that made me a fan. I get the whole Snow White and 7 Dwarfs vibe that many have spoke of when I see this film. The professors trying to write an encyclopedia and learn the slang of the age is funny, especially since many of the terms are outdated for now. Gary Cooper did a great job with this movie too. I feel that the chemistry between Barbara and him was good and natural. Although the storyline is simply, that is the beauty of it; the movie is light-hearted, funny, and good to watch. I recommend this movie for any movie ... I love this movie. Looking back at Barbara Stanwyck's career, I have to say her screw-ball comedies are some of my favorites.
