I love the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. It is a classic horror film and the granddaddy of all slashers. Never holding much hope for remakes I watched this one with trepidation. Imagine my surprise when I did not feel the need to turn up my nose and declare it just a wannabe. I am not saying that this one can compare to the original in quality - and I mean "horror" quality, obviously this one had a much bigger budget. Texas Chainsaw had a bare bones budget and the gritty look of it is what made it feel more real. When the images are too polished and slick you do not immerse yourself in the story, in the back of your head you think of how nice looking the cast is and how the special effects are too graphic. There is terror in what you do not see and newer movies with all the technology and F/X advances can show more - shocking yes, but not as much terror as a flash of blood or the actor's reactions. As a remake it is passable - unlike The Fog, stay away from that one! - but I still like the original. Even after you know it did not really happen you still wonder. As usual in newer films the girl is plucky - she puts up a fight, and to me that is a plus. I got tired of seeing women portrayed as whimpering fools who could not fight back even with a weapon in their hands. There is no nudity - another change in horror movies - but there is some objectionable language, what do you expect frm people being chased with a chainsaw? So this is recommended for horror fans, it may not be the original but it is pretty good and has some scary parts.Read full review
Tobe Hooper's TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE appeared like a nightmare in 1974, establishing a whole new genre of horror film. Thirty years later, the TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE is back. Directed by well-known commercial and video director Marcus Nispel, and produced by Michael Bay (ARMAGEDDON, PEARL HARBOR), this remake begins in the same place as the original. Five friends are driving through Texas on their way to a concert in Dallas. But when they stop to pick up a hitchhiker, their trip takes a turn for the worse. The friends--Erin (Jessica Biel), Kemper (Eric Balfour), Morgan (Jonathan Tucker), Pepper (Erica Leerhsen), and Andy (Mike Vogel)--have no idea what they're in for when they ask the local sheriff (R. Lee Ermey) for help. It isn't long before the blood begins to pour and the notorious chainsaw of the maniacal, murderous Leatherface starts to roar. Although considered relatively low budget (9.5 million) by 2003 moviemaking standards, Nispel's remake is worlds away from the no-budget feel of Hooper's original. Where that film left much of the actual gore off camera, Nispel and Bay up the ante by showing every death in all its gruesome detail. They also up the dramatic ante, building to a final act that is relentless and terrifying. I find this movie a really perfect horror movie with Great cast. This is my favorite of all Texas Chainsaw Massacre parts or remaks. See or buy this, you gonna love this movie!!!Read full review
i love the original and usually hate remakes. i really liked this one. they didnt try to follow the original scene for scene, thank God. but it still has the same feel to it. the acting is actually good and the kill scenes are amazing too. one funny thing to watch for is the "dude that wont die" as we call him.....he severs arteries, goes through extreme pain and still lives, hahahah! but all in all, this is a good horror flick.
Dare I say it? YES I dare..it's better then the original! I usually hate remakes, but this one rocks! Jessica Biehl(sp?) is fantastic as the lead in this film! The others all unknown at least to me are equally fantastic..I collect haunted items and loved this movie soo much I named one of my many Spirits after the lead male character Kemper...I also loved the name Pepper another Character..be warned this movie is NOT for children I believe under the age of 17..film is very gory do not eat while watching this movie if you have a weak stomach..also it will scare the skin right off you so you may not want to watch it in the dark!! The makers of this movie can hold their heads up high they did an outstanding job!! I wont go into detail about the movie just know this is a must not miss movie..but watch it in groups or at least with someone you can cuddle with..Read full review
