A Book on Year Of the Pitcher Is A Big Hit
Wendel attempts to connect the dots to show the 1968 baseball season reflected the social and political changes going on in America at the same. Yes, there were some connections, but I dont' really see where 1968 (I was there) was anymore a turning point than 1964 or other years. Just like a baseball games, the changes that occur late in a game are all a result of earlier events. And, just like baseball, to only review home runs is a farce. A missed third strike call earlier in the game is just as important. The elections and assasinations in '68 did not start or end changes that had been in motion for years. For baseball, 1968 was the year that caused the rules to be changed to help hitters increase offense. For Wendel the baseball part of his book is what saves the day. The ... The information he has presented from interviewing many of players is informative and insightful. He has dug deeper and unearthed many tresures. My favorite is Bob Gibson asking players to donate 1% of their salaries for one year to Curt Flood. Wendel also provides some context by including what was going on in other sports as the season unfolds (remember the Mexico City Olympics?). This is a great read, and better than 90% of the baseball books you'll ever read. It's actually worth the cover price. If you haven't read David Halberstam's book on 1964, it would make a great companion to this fine effort.

Great book.
Great book.Really enjoyed.I was only nine in 1968 but I remember a lot of the goings on that year and it was the first world series I remember watching on tv.
