Major Reisman (Lee Marvin), the noncriminal in charge of the group, whips the men into a crack unit, uses them to best the troops of his by-the-book superior officer, Colonel Breed (Robert Ryan), in war games, then leads the steely antiheroes on their perilous assault.The film is studded with standout performances, including Telly Savalas as a religious psychopath with a febrile animosity toward Germans and John Cassavetes in an Oscar-nominated portrayal as an insubordinate, poison-tongued hothead. Ernest Borgnine, Donald Sutherland, Charles Bronson, and football legend Jim Brown further round out the impressive collection of talent. Good war flick but not very real
This is the improbable story of a bunch of WWII military convicts gets recruited into a special unit that can use their very unique "skills". It's definately worth watching - a pretty good "down in the dirt and mud" NTSC VHS movie but this particular version was issued in 1996. As far as reality goes, it doesn't do much - it's not a real story. Don't even bother with any type of meaning to the story and don't feel bad if you miss the message - there isn't any. It's just pure war entertainment with an all-star cast - and quite exciting. Commando action in WWII
Lee Marvin is delightfully gritty as a cynical army Major given a suicide mission by military brass. 12 condemned prisoners are given the "opportunity" for clemency if they can infiltrate a chateau used as a retreat by Nazi officers and eliminate as many Nazis as possible on the eve of the D-day invasion. Charles Bronson is outstanding in a supporting role as an able officer condemned for shooting one of his own men, who was cowardly attempting to flee the battle field with his platoon's medical supplies.
