About this product

Product Information

Andre de Toth's remake of MYSTERY OF THE WAX MUSEUM is one of the first and best 3-D (stereoscopic) feature films, an alternative technology (like Cinemascope, Cinerama) used by 1950s directors attempting to compete with the new threat of television. Professor Jarrod (Vincent Price) is a devoted wax figure sculptor for his museum in 1910s NYC. When his financial partner, Sidney Wallace (Paul Cavanagh), demands more sensational exhibits to increase profits, Jarrod refuses. The vengeful Wallace torches the museum, leaving Jarrod for dead. Miraculously, Jarrod survives (though his hands and legs are rendered useless) and builds a new House of Wax with help from threatening deaf-mute sculptor, Igor (Charles Bronson). The museum's popular 'Chamber of Horrors' showcases recent crimes like the murder of Wallace, a victim of a cloaked, disfigured killer along with his fiancee, Cathy (Carolyn Jones). When Cathy's friend, Sue (Phyllis Kirk), visits the museum she makes a discovery that leads to the horrifying truth behind the House of Wax. With gasp inducing (and tongue-in-cheek) 3-D scenes like the museum fire, paddleball man and can-can girls, de Toth creates an atmospheric film which stands up as a horror classic in 2-D as well.

    Priceless

Wonderful colourful fantasy horror with Vincent Price excelling in another eccentric role as a waxwork modeller with a difference. This movie is now also available in its original 3D, though this particular 2D version comes with the added bonus of the 1930s movie Mystery of the Wax Museum in its original 2 colour technicolor. A rare gem! Wonderful. KAN

  • Outstanding Film

An outstanding film with Vincent Price at his best. Set in a private waxworks museum with Price playing both part owner and gifted sculptor, it charts his downfall and then revenge against his treacherous partner. It also features Charles Bronson's debut as an actor who went on to great things. If you like old school horror which does not rely heavily on modern day computer generated effects, then this is for you.

  • Well worth a visit!

Fast moving 2D version of 3D movie from the 1950s. Entertaining for its spooky story, but also good for film buffs to see how the shots were set to give the best 3D effects. The film is now available on Blu-ray in its original 3D format and I shall be purchasing my copy very soon.

  • Classic films wax and wane – this one is here to stay. Watch if you DARE

In this classic horror film we see a gifted sculptor (Vincent Price) have decades of his work destroyed by a ruthless money grabbing mercenary businessman driven by greed. What follows is tale of deep misery and wretchedness suffered by the forlorn tormented sculptor as he attempts to rebuild his life and recreate his masterpieces while the villain continues to dupe the sculptor until the master craftsman is eventually driven insane – with disastrous consequences that leads to a thrilling horrific climax that will deeply penetrate your psyche forever. KEEP WELL AWAY FROM CHILDREN!
