The theatrical movie, released in 1996 is is my favorite movie ever. I am a shameless fan of what is an unabashed nostalgic journey to the 60's to watch a rock and roll fairy tale unfold. In the end, everyone has a somewhat happy ending, even sour puss Jimmy. So it is apparent that this was the appeal and the final decision of the theatrical version; to take this movie (written by director Tom Hanks) and make it a gem of happiness. It was with great interest and anticipation that I bought this uncut/director's version about this rock and roll journey from anonimity to fame to real happiness. I am not disappointed but this version is a completely different movie in that it is more realistic and a bit harsher. There are some parts of this film that could have stayed in the theatrical version but this is heavier story telling. It doesn't lose its appeal but as this tale is sometimes called Beatlesque then that would be the perfect analogy. In the way that the Beatles were marketed as wholesome, all-the-time fun guys that you could trust with your sister, then this version of "That Thing You Do!" would be more like the reality of who the Beatles were during those Beatlemania days. They got to where they were with a certain amount of history in a tooth and nail industry. It all comes down to personal preferences and that would be my final decision. This is a great excercise for someone who studies film and could compare how one vision led to two different perspectives. Its still a good film and a decent purchase, but I prefer the film that promises, "in every life there comes a time when that thing you dream becomes that thing you do." In this uncut version, this dream is just a tad too dark compared to the theatrical version. Sometimes you just want to watch a movie and have fun and dream a little. Why not buy both and be your own judge?Read full review
Hanks did a great job depicting some of what it was like to be in a "garage band" in the early to mid 60s. Having never had the exact experience the Wonders do in the movie, there was much I could relate to. Interesting choices were made as far as characters go. In my experience, the "creative" member was usually the "leader" in the group instead of the "smart" member. Also, some local "managers" were more interested in profiting off a young group's endeavors than promoting them. Those are very minor critiques. My favorite part is when they hear themselves for the first time on the radio. From everything I've read on other name groups, that reaction is somewhat universal. The extended director's cut is better than the theatrical release as it provides missing parts that help fill in gaps that exist in the theatrical. Fun movie that appeals to all ages and worth owning and or seeing.Read full review
