All I know is I wouldn't want to be in the book club of the reviewer who gave this comic masterpiece one star. Did they have trouble getting through Don Quixote? Or anything that doesn't have a shirtless man riding a horse on the cover? My guess would be yes. One of the funniest books ever written, this book will leave you literally laughing out loud. That isn't easy to do. Its structure is inventive and the characters are rich and nuanced. This book really captures the spirit of New Orleans--an important American city that has lost some of the character Toole captured so well. It's tragic that Toole never got to see the success of his book, and that readers will never be able to read more of his work. At least we have this.

Absolutely wonderful book. Deserving of the praise and awards it has garnered. I read this a long time ago and had lost the book. I needed to replace it so I could read, and have, it again. I generally prefer paperbacks because they pack and carry more easily and I always like to have a book with me. e.g. When I go shopping with my wife and she gets distracted by frilly things I can read whilst she spends. This is as good a piece of fiction as you can find. It is poignant and very funny. I highly recommend it unless you prefer unrelentingly sad and boring literature. If so this isn't your cup of lemon juice.
A classic, pulitzer prize winner from 1980. My favorite book and I've read a lot of them. Bought it for a gift for a friend who needs a laugh.

We read this book at the suggestion of one of our Book Club members--only two of the nine members finished it--and they struggled to do that. Nonsensical, idiotic and just plain weird was how it was described. I couldn't get past 30 pages. Painful. Why it won the 1981 Pulitizer is beyond me.
There is a story about this book. The author died before the book was published and his mother sent it around to publishers to get it published. She finally got it published and it became a best seller. The book I bought was signed by Mrs. Toole, John's mother, so it is like owning a piece of literary history.
