Warum wollen wir die Weisheit Christi lieber aus Schriften von Menschen kennen lernen als aus Christus selbst? Was dieser versprochen hat, dass er mit uns sein werde bis ans Ende der Zeiten, lost er vor allem in seinen Schriften ein, in denen er fur uns auch heute noch lebt, atmet, spricht, beinahe hatte ich gesagt, wirkungsvoller als damals, als er unter den Menschen weilte. (Erasmus von Rotterdam, Paraclesis) Vor 500 Jahren, im Marz 1516, erschien in Basel eines der Bucher, welche die Welt veranderten - oder zumindest dazu beitrugen, sie zu verandern. Unter dem Titel Novum Instrumentum publizierte Erasmus von Rotterdam eine Edition des Neuen Testaments. Seine Gegner bezeichneten das Werk als Trojanisches Pferd, dem eine Horde von Haretikern entstiegen sei, oder als Ei, das Martin Luther dann ausgebrutet habe. Erasmus' Arbeit brachte nicht die Autoritat der Bibel ins Wanken, wohl aber diejenige der Kirche. Vor allem Universitatstheologen und Monche sahen ihre Position in Gefahr und wehrten sich - mit Erfolg: 1559 wurde das Gesamtwerk des Erasmus im Index librorum prohibitorum der katholischen Kirche verboten. Im Zentrum seiner Ausgabe stand fur Erasmus die Uberarbeitung der damals gultigen lateinischen Ubersetzung des Neuen Testaments. Er verbesserte die Vulgata nach dem griechischen Originaltext, den er neben die Ubersetzung stellte und so erstmals im Druck publizierte. In ausfuhrlichen Anmerkungen begrundete er seine Anderungen am Vulgata-Text. Die Motivation und die Zielsetzung seines Unterfangens legte er in drei Einleitungsschriften dar, in denen er auch eine Reform der Theologenausbildung anmahnte, weg von der scholastischen Methode, hin zu einer auf die Kenntnis der drei biblischen Sprachen Hebraisch, Griechisch und Lateinisch gestutzten Theologie. Dem Studium des Neuen Testaments mass Erasmus deshalb so grosse Bedeutung bei, weil er uberzeugt war, dass jenes ein besseres Bild Christi vermittle als die Schriften der Theologen, wie das vorangestellte Zitat aus der Paraclesis, einer Einleitungsschrift zum Novum Instrumentum, verdeutlicht.

The seller is one of the best there is - high quality books, reasonable prices, securely packaged.
I do, however, recommend some changes to their shipping - they show a shipper (SortHub) on eBay, but the tracking # they email is for a different carrier. It’s difficult to know where my purchase is.
This time, it was delivered a week late. In the grand scheme of things not a big deal. But it shouldn’t be this difficult to accurately track my purchase.
