About this product

Product Information

In Winter Solstice Rosamunde Pilcher brings her readers into the lives of five very different people.... Elfrida Phipps, once of London's stage, moved to the English village of Dibton in hopes of making a new life for herself. Gradually she settled into the comfortable familiarity of village life -- shopkeepers knowing her tastes, neighbors calling her by name -- still she finds herself lonely. Oscar Blundell gave up his life as a musician in order to marry Gloria. They have a beautiful daughter, Francesca, and it is only because of their little girl that Oscar views his sacrificed career as worthwhile. Carrie returns from Australia at the end of an ill-fated affair with a married man to find her mother and aunt sharing a home and squabbling endlessly. With Christmas approaching, Carrie agrees to look after her aunt's awkward and quiet teenage daughter, Lucy, so that her mother might enjoy a romantic fling in America. Sam Howard is trying to pull his life back together after his wife has left him for another. He is without home and without roots, all he has is his job. Business takes him to northern Scotland, where he falls in love with the lush, craggy landscape and set his sights on a house. It is the strange rippling effects of a tragedy that will bring these five characters together in a large, neglected estate house near the Scottish fishing town of Creagan. It is in this house, on the shortest day of the year, that the lives of five people will come together and be forever changed. Rosamunde Pilcher's long-awaited return to the page will warm the hearts of readers both old and new. Winter Solstice is a novel of love, loyalty and rebirth.

Reviews
"The author of The Shell Seekers has penned another romance sure to give fans the warm fuzzies." -- Publishers Weekly   "Elegant reading in which Rosamunde Pilcher provides the two hallmarks of her writing: gentle, atomospheric recreation of English lifestyles and an appealing cast of interesting people whose lives come together for new experiences while theyre making other plans." -- RT Book Reviews (four stars)   "... remarkably evocative sense of place and watercolorist's eye for muted detail." -- Kirkus Reviews

I ordered 2 books from this seller; this one was exactly as described and in good condition. The other is even better, but covered in other feedback. I would say that this seller's books are in better condition than other online used bookstores for the same price. The books were well wrapped, again better than other online used bookstores. Shipping was free which is always a plus. The books came quickly considering sometimes roads are closed due to high winds here. Very happy with purchase!

    Dysfunctional people recreate themselves.

This book is full of creative ways to solve challenges and live a full life. The characters are all interesting and unique. If you enjoy English and Scottish settings and a world of wholesome action this is the book for you. I enjoyed every page.

  • Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher

I am a fan of Rosamunde Pilcher and had just completed a trip to Scotland when I discovered Winter Solstice (bulk of the story takes place in the far Highlands, above Inverness). The book combines the usual threads of an R Pilcher novel - very true, believable people falling in to events that could happen, not contrived. It is her storytelling, moving, weaving in a very subtle (very Scottish) manner that hooks the reader until the very last page, and makes them wish the story would continue. Taking place around the year it was published (2000), the novel reflects fairly modern times. The main characters come from busy London (and other cities, south) to a remote village in the Highlands (not necessarily up to the expected standards of 2000). It is Rosamunde Pilcher's painting of her ...

  • Winter Solstice by Rosamunde Pilcher (2000)

If you have ever read one of Rosamounde Pilcher's books, I feel certain that it was just the beginning of your journey. She will take you to places you will be glad you went and introduce you to characters you will walk with and experience time as if you were there with them. As you turn the pages in her book you will not want to put it down. "Winter Solstice" is one of her best. A friend loaned me one of her books and I was hooked. So I found "Winter Solstice" at the library and read it in July one year and enjoyed it and encouraged my daughter to read it. It has become her favorite. Rosamounde Pilcher has a way to keep the reader comfortable and cozy even in the middle of the winter season. "Winter Solstice" is a very good feeling book to be ...

  • Great read in winter

This the fourth book I’ve read, shared and given away to friends. I plan to read the big four, The She’ll Seekers, September, Coming Home and Winter Soltice again in 2020 because I’ve just been diagnosed with macular degeneration and want to enjoy them one more time. Ms Pilcher passed away in April so we’ll never have more.
