About this product

Product Information

The Worldly Philosophersis a bestselling classic that not only enables us to see more deeply into our history but helps us better understand our own times. In this seventh edition, Robert L. Heilbroner provides a new theme that connects thinkers as diverse as Adam Smith and Karl Marx. The theme is the common focus of their highly varied ideas -- namely, the search to understand how a capitalist society works. It is a focus never more needed than in this age of confusing economic headlines. In a bold new concluding chapter entitled "The End of the Worldly Philosophy?" Heilbroner reminds us that the word "end" refers to both the purpose and limits of economics. This chapter conveys a concern that today's increasingly "scientific" economics may overlook fundamental social and political issues that are central to economics. Thus, unlike its predecessors, this new edition provides not just an indispensable illumination of our past but a call to action for our future.

  • A most enjoyable read

This was a most enjoyable read. The book itself is used widely as a textbook, however can be read for pleasure just as well. Mr. Heilbroner had an extensive knowledge of these political philosphers and broke down their ideas into a somewhat easy and understandable way. A great read for anyone interested in the history of political and economic history.

  • The Worldly Philosophers by Robert L. Heilbroner (1999)

I loved the principles discussed about each of the economist. They were presented in a comprehedible depth and I loved learning each time I studied in the text. Highly recommended. Heilbroner knows his materials and I have seen his work quoted in other texts of mine.

  • It's ok.

  • Fast shipping. Condition of book was as stated. Overall, good experience.

I bought this book for one of my classes. It helped in my class explain the economic material for the class.
