It's hard to know where to begin with this book, but the bottom line is this: it is the comprehensive and definitive guide to the Japanese side of the Battle of Midway. It omits almost nothing, covering every aspect of the Japanese side from the youngest casualty of the battle (a 16-year-old) to Japanese aircraft launching and damage control procedures. The central point of this book is to deflate and defeat the myths about Midway, that the Japanese outnumbered the Americans immensely at the point of contact (they didn't), that poor Japanese scouting led to their critical indecision (it didn't), or that the American torpedo planes from VT-8 sacrificed themselves to enable the dive bombers to score the great victory (they certainly didn't). After reading the book, you retain your admiration for the American triumph at the battle, but understand the sloppiness of the Japanese planning, the arrogance, and the systemic failures and weaknesses within the Imperial Japanese Navy that caused the disaster. Also useful are the superb maps and charts, that show where and how the ships and planes maneuvered, where the American bombs hit on the Japanese carriers, and even a drawing of how the carrier Kaga looked before she went down to Davy Jones's locker. I cannot recommend this book too highly, to the scholarly student or someone who just wants a good read about a great battle. It will change your view of the engagement.Read full review
The quintessential history of the battle of Midway. A must read before seeing the new movie "Midway" (2019). Many myths have arisen about this turning point in the war in the Pacific, this book shines a light on what actually happened. Made all the more poignant with the discovery last week of 2 of the 4 IJN aircraft carriers sunk during the battle.

This is an excellent and highly detailed study of a pivotal battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II. I have many volumes studying this era and this battle in particular. This is the best I’ve found for either the reader with a general interest or an expert.
