Synopsis
In mid-1964, Keith Widdowson got wind that the Western Region was hell-bent on being the first to eliminate the steam locomotive on its tracks by December 1965.Realising the significance of this decision, the 17-year-old hurriedly homed in on train services still in the hands of GWR steam power, aiming to catch runs with the last examples before their premature annihilation. The Great Western Steam Retreatrecalls Widdowson's teenage exploits, soundtracked by hits from the Beatles, the Kinks and the Rolling Stones, throughout the Western Region and former Great Western Railway lines. In his search for steam, he documents the extreme disorder that resulted from that decision, paying tribute to the train crews who managed to meet demanding timings in the face of declining cleanliness, the poor quality of coal and the major problem of recruiting both footplate and shed staff. This illustrated book completes the author's Steam Chase series and provides a compelling snapshot into the comradery that characterised the final years of steam alongside the long-gone journeys that can never be recreated., In mid-1964, Keith Widdowson got wind that the Western Region was hell-bent on being the first to eliminate the steam locomotive - the target date being December 1965. Upon realising the significance of the situation, he hurriedly homed in on train services still in the hands of GWR steam power, aiming to catch runs with trains prior to their premature annihilation. The extreme external disorder during the final years of steam provided the photographer the opportunity to capture the steam locomotive in a never-before-witnessed condition, with steam/smoke escaping from a multitude of new outlets never intended as such by their designers, such problems being particularly acute throughout the WR. This illustrated book completes the steam chase series, detailing the author's teenage exploits chasing steam throughout Britain - a scenario never again to be repeated., One man's personal travelogue of his journeys throughout BR's Western Region, Wales and the Welsh Marches during the final months of steam

- a***o (50)- Feedback left by buyer.Past monthVerified purchaseVery slow to arrive (well past the estimate), but came safely at last in minimalist packaging. Customer service was polite when contacted regarding delay and an initial lack of tracking details. After communicating with them, the tracking eventually began to provide updates but it was a long wait. The book was a different edition than pictured but it was in a “very good” condition as advertised; also it was fairly priced. Overall, I am satisfied except for the very long wait.
- w***w (2772)- Feedback left by buyer.Past yearVerified purchaseThis is an outstanding seller to deal with. Fair prices that are more than reasonable in this economy. The product is in better condition than described, a true value for my money. Packaged and shipped well shows seller has concern for the products he sells to arrive in excellent condition. The seller is friendly and communicates timely with his customers. I highly recommend this seller and would do business again anytime.
