About this product

Product Information

AMD Opteron processor gives companies a whole new way of doing business. The processor is based on AMD64 technology - an innovative technology that allows IT professionals to run 32- and 64-bit applications simultaneously. This means that organizations can grow into 64-bit computing without sacrificing their existing IT investments. With its Direct Connect Architecture, the AMD Opteron processor helps eliminate the real challenges and bottlenecks of system architectures because everything is directly connected to the CPU. Direct Connect Architecture delivers the best 2P and 4P architecture for x86 computing, resulting in the best performance-per-watt in the market. It's the ideal performance boost for the working environments of today and tomorrow.Dual-core AMD Opteron processor extends AMD's Direct Connect Architecture by connecting two CPUs on one die, improving overall system performance and efficiency.

Top notch seller communication. Saw a defective part on the motherboard and offered a refund. I took the part anyways to add to the collection and as an opportunity to try and fix it myself. Part was well packaged, arrived safely and as described. A+ 5* seller, absolutely will be adding as a favorite seller and buying from again. Thanks!

Item was exactly as per the description and arrived well packed and in EXCELLENT physical condition. The shipping charges were a little high for the weight and size, but not too expensive. Definitely a keeper. I may buy again from this seller in the future.

  • Excellent price/performance upgrade for your dual Opteron motherboard.

Purchased as an upgrade to my Dell xw9300 workstation (upgraded from one single core opteron 252). Now have 4 cores (2 x 2 cores) vs. 1, and with an 8 MB memory upgrade, this workstation now runs Windows 7 without any slowdowns or hiccups. The upgrade pushed performance pretty close to that of my main PC which is running an Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 at 2.5 GHz. Price / performance is really good right now (as of Nov 2011). You can find 2 matched Opteron 280s (brand new in tray) for around $18 on eBay. This is not the fastest socket-940 Opteron available. The Opteron 285 is clocked a bit higher (2.6 GHz), but prices tend to be higher as well, with a *used* matching pair starting at around $30 and new matched pairs going for closer to $100.

  • Great CPU for the money, now and back in the day...

Purchased this product as an upgrade to a motherboard/cpu combo. I'm certainly pleased by the performance of these chips, rating 6.8 in Windows 7 WEI. They do tend to run a bit hot. I have mine paired with copper plated/heat-piped coolers and they idle one core at 50-55C. The other core runs a more modest 40-45C. On both CPUs it's like this. It's possible it has something to do with the configuration of my Tyan motherboard. Both CPUs being smushed together onto an ATX sized board. The resulting air pocket between the angled heatsinks could cause the heat issue...Which would put idle temps at a more manageable 40-45C. Overall, I'm very happy with the purchase. I replaced a pair of 265 1.8GHz CPUs and the extra speed is certainly felt.

  • A good way to save when building a lower powered server with used parts.

An excellent CPU for its time. Its performance compares to the first generation Core 2 Duo from Intel. The DDR-400 registered memory that it uses can be found at quite a low price on eBay. It's basically the same design that AMD still sells today, but with a slower dual channel DDR-1 memory interface. That's why AMD is not want you want if you're looking for new hardware to make a high performance computer. Only buy new AMD hardware if you're on a budget, prefer more cores to more power in a single core, and don't want to spend the extra money on a better Intel CPU. And if you're going to buy AMD, in some cases you can save even more by getting used AMD hardware since it is even cheaper but not that much slower than what AMD sells today, which as I said, is slow to begin with. This ...

  • Good old processor

We chose this processor because it balances performance and price. Our budget to upgrade our server to a pair of Opteron 280s was $40, and the 285, the next step up, was something like $40 each. Considering the only difference between the 280 and the 285 was a 200mhz increment in clock speed, we decided that the 280 was best for us. We upgraded from a pair of Opteron 246 which are single core at 2.0ghz, so this is a doubling of our processing ability. As for this chip's capacity, it supports AMD_64 applications quite well. I would love to have AMD's hardware-virtualizing instruction set, but nothing in the socket 940 supports it. you would need a socket-AM2 board and chip. Here's the /proc/cpuinfo entry for our 246; we have not yet slotted the 280, but it should be ...

  • Good investment for my needs!

I too bought the Opteron 280s code OSP280FAA6CB. This product was needed to give me two CPU's in my Ultra 40. This workhorse of a deskside server is used for dual booting different O/S's and even does VirtualBox very well. No issues with this product.
