Synopsis
The Southern belle lives on, in a world of  proprieties and protocols that would shame the Royal  Family (and have). An uproarious guide to the  manners, mores, and mystique of the legendary ladies of  the South. What The Official Preppy  Handbook did for the madras-and-penny-loafer  set, A Southern Belle Primer   does for the indestructible ladies from below the  Mason-Dixon line.

Fantastic seller. Excellent price. Book came as described, essentially in excellent condition for physics book published in 1988. I also love the vintage graphics and it even has the old large floppy diskettes in the back to boot(no pun intended). Packaged very well. Shipped and delivered without delay and on time. A++++ seller. I look forward to shopping from Ex Libris Used Books on an on going basis.

A picture of the OLD South

Through the years I have purchased many of these. Gifts to YANKEE friends who do not understand such things as "Never wear white before Easter and after Labor Day" plus others of equal importance in years past. My Grandmother was a stickler to many of the things mentioned in this book. Sadly many gone now in the new generation but some older ladies such as my Mother still hang on to the ways. Read it , laugh, and then cry that many of the things your grandmother was forever saying are leaving us. Quickly. One of these copies is going to a new friend, from Dublin, Ireland.

  • Even a northerner can like "A Southern Belle Primer"

This is a very amusing, tongue-in-cheek look at the southern debutant life. If you like the Sweet Potato Queens books (this book was recommended by SPQ author Jill Conner Browne), you'll enjoy this. Even if you can't personally relate to fretting over your choice of silver pattern or what kind of gloves to wear, you can go along for the ride. The type was a little difficult for these old eyes to read in the introductions: it is a small, italicized font, brown ink on lighter brown stock. I'd suggest not straining your eyes to see by reading in bed if you're over 40. Sit up properly in a comfy chair near good lighting...and make sure you have tomato sandwiches and a tall, cold glass of sweet tea nearby.

  • No, Princess Margaret would not have made it.

A very funny book, and much of it rings true, or at least it would in families who have lived in the South for a long time. I especially like the mentions of things that are tacky. There's no way to explain tacky. You just know.

  • Southern ladies

I bought this book as a gift for a friend in another country so she see could better understand people in the American south. It has lovely antidotal discriptions that portray the feeling and the passion of good southern upbringing. The book is simple and very well written. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to have a good laugh and to those wanting a little insight into southern living. Our culture is very rich and should be shared with the world. Of course we have come a long way and really do not live exactly by the guides in this book now but the flavor of the south still rings true.

  • Perfect coffee table book for my home in NC

I'm from NY/NJ, and have shared with neighbors and friends at my beach house in eastern NC....eal fun, and it's really true about the southern belles !
