John Dunbar (Costner) asks to be reassigned to the western frontier before it disappears. At his isolated post he develops a relationship with the peaceful Lakota Sioux and a white woman (an excellent, Oscar-nominated Mary McDonnell) who lives among them, finding greater kinship with them than with his own people. But his life with the Sioux is threatened when the Army appears, and Dunbar must decide where his loyalties truly lie.     Native Americans, Cival War, and just plain great writing and acting.

    What a project! This is Kevin's first directorial try and its a winner all around. He painstakingly sets each scene to tell one of the most hauntingly told stories in American film. I believe things just keep getting better and better over the decades. Here is a perfect example. Actor turned director to say this is what I want to show the world. The music is so moving and cinematography is stunning. Enjoy!

    Dances With Wolves is a strong statement on behalf of The Native Americans of this nation. Bravo!!

    Speaks to historical event surrounding treatment of Native Americans a d how they were poorly misjudged and treated. Kevin Costner played a strong, convincing role, my favorite actor. The soundtrack to this movie is also very relaxing.

    One of Kevin Costner's best movies.

    A Classic. Wish I hadn't waited so long to watch it. You definitely need subtitles with this one to get the full affect as all of the Native American roles are spoken in Lakota Sioux.

    Dances With Wolves

    Fascinating look at life on the American frontier. An Army officer in a remote station slowly makes friends with the local Indians, and over time becomes one of their tribe. Then the army shows up. And you can guess a lot of drama ensues. Well acted by all. Very realistic. Great film.

    A Classic DVD

    This Kevin Costner Western with a twist- includes the Native Americans not just as trite renegades, but as fleshed-out characters, and even includes a famous bear actor. This movie is well-suited to Jungian analysis. The Cavalry, the wolves, the Native Americans, and the stunning scenery all make for an exceptional, and satisfying family movie. Fully recommended for repeated viewing.
