About this product

Product Information

Homeworld is a real-time strategy game set in deep space, played in a truly 3D environment. Fleets of individual ships can be sent to explore, harvest resources, and engage enemies in all directions -- up or down, backward or forward, and to either side. An innovative camera system that focuses on objects instead of places offers easy control over the perspective, allowing the player to follow these units that move freely in open space. Like the main play view, a cube-shaped mini-map can be zoomed in or out and rotated on all three axes, to let the player view the vast, surrounding area from any angle.

The Mothership -- an enormous structure representing the combined efforts of a planet's entire population over many years -- serves as the base of operations. Here, resources are processed, technologies are researched, and new ships are built to serve a variety of purposes. While the action in Homeworld plays out in real time, the game can be paused when the player sets research goals or places build orders. Fleets and individual units can be given orders while the single-player game is paused as well, permitting the orchestration of elaborate, effective tactical maneuvers.

The main storyline of Homeworld's single-player game follows the Kushan, a doomed race living on an unforgiving planet called Kharak. In the ancient ruins of the planet's earliest city, scientists discover a piece of an amazing relic, which hints at the Kushan's forgotten history. Though much is learned from this discovery, including the technology required for interstellar travel, much of the past and future remain unknown.

Realizing that Kharak will support them for only a few generations more, and inspired by evidence of what may be their true home planet, the Kushan come together as one, devoting all their energy and resources to a single, great project. The enormous, space-worthy Mothership is built and hundreds of Kushan are chosen to travel aboard it into the unknown, placed in a state of suspended animation and packed together as the most precious cargo. The fate of an entire people now depends on the strange and dangerous journey ahead.

  • Space War Baby!!!

One of my good friends recommended this game to me, since I'm a big fan of space-games and intergalactic wars and aliens! And what a recommendation it was! This game, although a little old now, is absolutely sweet! The amount of modifications out there for it is ridicules! You can even add Star Trek ships to this game and use them in your fleet to bash the enemy! The 3D space control is nice and smooth, although a little hard to get used to in the beginning, but it definitely adds another dimension to strategy games. In the game itself, it's nice that you can actually hide the controls once you memorize all the keyboard shortcuts, the online play is really nice, and the graphics are acceptable for its age. The mods for this game are still being developed, so even though it's a little old ...

  • Homeworld

This game while being eight or nine years old plays as fresh now as it did then. It has all of the classic RTS elements but makes things very interesting in each mission. This game will make you think, and can be very frustrating, until you figure out what to do. This is where it shines: making you think it is impossible to survive, punishing severely your mistakes and losses. But once you achieve success, or figure out the path to success, you feel as though you have had an epiphany. But for the casual player the game can be tedious and boring. Some of it is very long (one mission to complete all of it takes about ten hours) and sometimes the action is VERY slow. But all in all it is an excellent game with an impressive set of checks-and-balances, and rewarding in the end.

  • The First Fully 3-D Strategy Game

The 1999 release of Sierra's Homeworld saw the birth of 3-D real-time strategy gaming. A wonderfully immersive storyline, beautiful ships, and a haunting soundtrack make this one of my favorite games of all time. I recently purchased a copy again and the great thing is it still works with Win7!!! The best part is that having an epic space battle no longer taxes my computer's abilities. On the down side, there are only two playable races and each goes through the exact same storyline vs the other, and by that I mean they switch places. Also, the between mission videos look to be hand-drawn animations which may bother some players. I would recommend this game to anyone who loves the Sci-Fi or strategy genres. In fact, I've already told a few I'm going to make them borrow it after I'm ...

  • Beautifully crafted Space RTS, a great game!

A true classic Space RTS. I played this when it originally arrived on the shelves in 1999 (at the age of 12), and 14 years later I'm still addicted to this game. I'm able to play it on Windows 7 with no issues other than screen resolution (I have black sidebars as my screen is 1366x768 & resolutions do not exceed 1024x768 - Likely fixed easily with a third party patch - there are plenty around for Homeworld & Homeworld 2). Imagine a much more personal 'Eve Online' experience or being just one Mothership in Sins of a Solar Empire, immersed in a battlefield that stretches in all directions but able to direct each unit individually - That's what Homeworld is to me. A true classic
