The Original Trek!
The Original is the best. This is the Star Trek I grew up on. This set-- the one with the plastic boxes that are vaguely tricorder-shaped-- are the DVDs that are *not* digitally altered to make the special effects updated and more "accessible" to a younger audience. This is the real McCoy (pun intended). I can see the case for updating the effects, but this is the way I remember Star Trek, and I love this set.The Original is the best. Star Trek Season Three
AFter not seeing this series for a number of years, I found that the show reflexed attitudes that I had forgotten about. Of course it no way measures up to the standards of the movies and shows that followed. It does reflect the male dominated world attitude and spent a lot of time in its shows casting its women in a secondary role. At the time, it is my understanding that the producers at Desi productions refused to have women in command rolls. Kirk was always the playboy and Spoke and the Doctor were always the ones who aspired to higher values and goals. The theme in those days didn't concern themselves as much with higher ideals. It seems to reflect the tone of the day. The good guy verse the bad guy and nothing more. Compared to the later series' and movies it is ... Classic presentation of classic sci fi television
This particular set is presented the way it was originally intended. The color and quality is better but no CGI has been added. Although CGI has come a long way the work on the remastered set is clunky and seems artificial for the most part. I never considered this show broken so why fix it, especially if it is sub standard. The collection is encased in a handsome retro box which is a bonus complete with a mini book. The discs are one sided and there are many which allows for a quality picture since there are a few episodes per disc. I prefer this to what else is available and can’t recommend it enough if you are a fan of the original show or you want to see what television was like in the 1960s. By the third season of the original Star Trek series, the budget had been slashed by $20,000 per episode and the show's best producers and writers (including Gene Roddenberry) had departed. The results are apparant as the quality of the episodes is, on average, very very low (almost as bad as some early season one episodes). The second half of the season is an almost uninterrupted parade of nearly unwatchable episodes. "Plato's Stepchildren", an episode which features Captain Kirk acting like a horse, appropriately herelds this decline. The only decent episodes after this point are "Let That Be Your Last Battlefield", dealing with racism, and "The Cloud Minders", dealing with terrorism. The rest is made up of truly awful episodes like "Wink of an Eye", "The Lights of Zetar", and "The ... On the other hand, the first half of the season is generally pretty good, with the exception of episodes like "The Empath" and "The Paradise Syndrome". In fact, episodes like "The Enterprise Incident" and especially "The Tholian Web" are far better than anything from the show's second season. "The Enterprise Incident" does a fantastic job developing the Romulans (better than "Balance of Terror") and Spock, while both it and "The Tholain Web" contain great suprises involving Captain Kirk. In addition, the special effects from season three are far, far better than any in previous seasons (a situation which is especially evident in "The Tholian Web"). The problem is that such high quality episodes are so, so rare and that the averge episode is so, so bad. Season three contains about four excellent epsidoes that are on par with or better than the best episodes of season two. But the typical episode is of so much lower quality than an average season one or season two episode that season three on the whole becomes nearly without value.
