About this product

Product Information

Picking up where Fall of Giants , the first novel in the extraordinary Century Trilogy, left off, Winter of the World follows its five interrelated families American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh through a time of enormous social, political, and economic turmoil, beginning with the rise of the Third Reich, through the great dramas of World War II, and into the beginning of the long Cold War. Carla von Ulrich, born of German and English parents, finds her life engulfed by the Nazi tide until daring to commit a deed of great courage and heartbreak . . . . American brothers Woody and Chuck Dewar, each with a secret, take separate paths to momentous events, one in Washington, the other in the bloody jungles of the Pacific . . . . English student Lloyd Williams discovers in the crucible of the Spanish Civil War that he must fight Communism just as hard as Fascism . . . . Daisy Peshkov, a driven social climber, cares only for popularity and the fast set until war transforms her life, while her cousin Volodya carves out a position in Soviet intelligence that will affect not only this war but also the war to come."

Great value for a great read!

Book in excellent condition with dust jacket intact. I've read several of Ken Follett's novels; this is the 2nd book in his Century series and I'm positive it will be compelling as the 1st book.

  • Excellent semi-fiction, explosive and brutal tale of world history.

Excellent book. Should be required reading for those taking 20th Century world history courses. Ken Follett wrote this from the perspective of the common man and the working classes. He follows the lives of individuals & their families in Great Britain, the United States, Germany, Soviet Russia, and Wales from the 1920's through to the late 1940's. The reader can better understand the complex European situation from the rise of the Third Reich to the beginning of the Cold War. All of the savagery of the Nazi regime, hardships and poverty of war, along with family secrets are inter-twined as people strive to survive. These are the years of political and economic turmoil as countries aligned themselves during World war II. The author chose to exclude many details of the war in order to ...

  • Winter of the World, Book II

I had book one before I found out it was a trilogy, so had to have book 2 and am awaiting book 3 next year. Love Follet's books. This is a history that covers many generations. These books are quite expensive when bought new, so was happy to find a copy at a reasonable price. They are large books, so will keep you reading for a long time......

  • A wonderful piece of historical fiction.

A great story backed with some real life history. An exceptionally well written book, with several interlaced stories that really keep your interest.

This particular purchase was a pleasant surprise - in 'new' condition, and in large print. --- which meant 1,200 pages. Massive!
