This 1992 masterpiece of literary nonfiction is a taut, terrifying yet poetic account of how, in 1949, thirteen young firefighters lost their lives while fighting a conflagration in a remote, steeply sloped part of western Montana. Maclean . . . is unsparing in his prose and dogged in his reporting, piecing together the elements that led to more than a dozen men suffocating and burning to death. The story, which I've read at least four times now, is agonizing to read, making the hairs on my arms stand on end. It is also one of the most pleasurable experiences I've had., This 1992 masterpiece of literary nonfiction is a taut, terrifying yet poetic account of how, in 1949, thirteen young firefighters lost their lives while fighting a conflagration in a remote, steeply sloped part of western Montana. Synopsis
On August 5, 1949, a crew of fifteen of the United States Forest Service's elite airborne firefighters, the Smokejumpers, stepped into the sky above a remote forest fire in the Montana wilderness. Two hours after their jump, all but three of these men were dead or mortally burned. Haunted by these deaths for forty years, Norman Maclean puts back together the scattered pieces of the Mann Gulch tragedy. Young Men and Fire won the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1992. "A magnificent drama of writing, a tragedy that pays tribute to the dead and offers rescue to the living.... Maclean's search for the truth, which becomes an exploration of his own mortality, is more compelling even than his journey into the heart of the fire. His description of the conflagration terrifies, but it is his battle with words, his effort to turn the story of the 13 men into tragedy that makes this book a classic."--from New York Times Book Review Editor's Choice, Best Books of 1992 "A treasure: part detective story, part western, part tragedy, part elegy and wholly eloquent ghost story in which the dead and the living join ranks cheerfully, if sometimes eerily, in a search for truth and the rest it brings."--Joseph Coates, Chicago Tribune "An astonishing book. In compelling language, both homely and elegant, Young Men and Fire miraculously combines a fascinating primer on fires and firefighting, a powerful, breathtakingly real reconstruction of a tragedy, and a meditation on writing, grief and human character.... Maclean's last book will stir your heart and haunt your memory."--Timothy Foote, USA Today "Beautiful.... A dark American idyll of which the language can be proud."--Robert M. Adams, The New York Review of Books " Young Men and Fire is redolent of Melville. Just as the reader of Moby Dick comes to comprehend the monstrous entirety of the great white whale, so the reader of Young Men and Fire goes into the heart of the great red fire and comes out thoroughly informed. Don't hesitate to take the plunge."--Dennis Drabelle, Washington Post Book World " Young Men and Fire is a somber and poetic retelling of a tragic event. It is the pinnacle of smokejumping literature and a classic work of 20th-century nonfiction."--John Holkeboer, The Wall Street Journal "Maclean is always with the brave young dead. . . . They could not have found a storyteller with a better claim to represent their honor. . . . A great book."--James R. Kincaid, New York Times Book Review

I was disappointed that the book I received, described as being in good condition, had water damage on several pages near the back including the back cover. I contacted the seller with pictures, and they responded promptly with the option to keep it and get a 50% refund or return it for a full refund. I kept the book and received my 50% refund promptly. The service was good, and I appreciated their timely and kind communication. For what it ended up costing me, the book was a pretty good value.

I am very pleased with my purchase, and I would buy from this seller again. I highly recommend this seller to everyone! The only problem was that the post office lost it for three days.

  • Old Man and Smoke

Endearing conversational, confessional tone, narrow but important subject, a search through dense smoke for answers to a sixty-five year old "catastrophe" in the MT mountains, soon becomes, to the reader, the story of the life-long obsession of an aging scholar to immerse himself in this singular deadly event of August 5, 1949. He gazes back repetitively at the Mann Gulch fire through the eyes of a scholar, a detective, a writer of Greek tragedy, a scientist, a priest, and a mountaineer. He places himself in the story and becomes perhaps its central tragic hero who dies before the story is told.

  • interesting history report on what was accepted and hard to believe it

it's been very interesting, reading about something that happened back in 1949. What took place, the aftermath, and even to today's history. I was there about 40 some years ago visiting and most recent 2021. It's interesting to see where this all took place and to what happened. An excellent place to go to and wonder about the history of the smokejumpers and such.

  • A Riveting and Tragic story of Brave Men

This book, along with "The Big Burn", by Timothy Egan, are wonderful reading. The Forest Service men with the bravery and strength to work in one of the most dangerous situations possible are humbling and awe inspiring.
