This is the 2nd Son DAT player I have owned. My first died a slow lonely death before being parted out. Terrible mechanism, cheap plastic parts. However, this is truly a upgrade from the Sony DCT-690. Lots of metal components, easy cover access for lubrication when necessary. The BCB board is just built better. The capacitors, diodes, traces, etc... are night and day different in quality. I get it, what is heavier, a ton of feathers or a ton of bricks? Digital is digital, however quality is lacking in most stereo components, but not in the A7.
I needed a second DAT recorder to fix mine. Both had identical transport mechanism. I managed to make a good one out of two broken ones! The device was well packed.
All the functions work like a charm after I restored it as much as I could.
It had a bad mechanism issue. I realigned one of the guide arm gear. That's it.
