When closed they are supposed to grab the string and lock on it so the tomato or other crops can be trained up some strings. They just slide down the string and the plant falls over. Ones that were used last year from a different vendor still work better although some of them break because of effects of the sun. That was the reason for buying these. The seller got them to me in a time
