The WD 5TB My Passport Portable External Hard Drive, after the support expiration has ended the troubles begin, the Drive Cannot Run too long after this Date... The WD 5TB My Passport Portable Run So Hot that it stops Operating. In other words, Western Digital reached their External Hard Drive Capacity limits with its WD 4TB My Passport Ultra, which is an excellent and very reliable Hard Drive. DO NOT PURCHASE THE WD 5TB MY PASSPORT PORTABLE EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE BECAUSE IT RUNS TOO HOT, AND STOPS WORKING.

I have several other Western Digital external drives of smaller capacity to store and back-up my photo shoots. They're quiet and fast, and they're powered by the USB cables they're moving data through. This time Acronis software was included to help automate the back-up process, but for some reason, the installation, even after several tries, wouldn't complete. That was just gravy, though, and the software snag has no effect on my opinion of this great little drive.

It was 4TB... Needed WD legacy driver to work well, not Windows driver. But WD doesn't offer that driver anymore so fortunately I know pack rat who has some stuff from windows 2000.

Whether it's My Passport, My Passport Ultra, or Element, I've become an enthusiastic customer of Western Digital and their portable hard drives. The first two My Passport 1TB drives I bought over 9 years ago are still working without fault, despite many re-writings and repurposes over the years. Now I own over 20 WD portables, from 1TB to 5TB. Half of them back-up the other half because, yes, occasionally a drive will fail. I've had three of the drives develop problems during the warranty period and WD replaced each quickly at no cost to me at all. When one replacement drive went astray upon shipment (UPS was at fault) WD OVERNIGHTED another replacement to me. That was really impressive. People who complain of getting a dud (dead) drive need to realise that it'll happen with any electric item sometimes. Contact the seller immediately and they will usually take care of you. Be wary of buying used drives that have not been factory refurbished by WD. I took a chance on a 4TB MP Ultra because of the $70 price. It ended up to be $70 wasted. I've always bought new since then. Read full review

I have a Toshiba Canvio Advance 4TB portable drive which has intermittent problems connecting properly. The My Passport(5TB) I bought is not as fast but rarely has a problem being seen by Windows 10 (or Win8.1), so I'm a bit happier with the My Passport from Western Digital. They are both with buying, but if reliability matters more than speed, then get the My Passport.
