The Sega Saturn had an unfortunate time in the USA. It just never had the kind of popularity that the Sony Playstation did. This has led to the Saturn being mostly forgotten now. But make no mistake, it is a great system. There are many great games that were released on the Saturn. It's ability to handle 2D sprites and graphics was actually much stronger than the Playstation's, and this shows in the beautiful 2D visuals the Saturn can produce. Some of the fighting games available for it are almost arcade perfect, such as Marvel Super Heroes. Sadly, many of the Saturn's best games were only released in Japan. The good news is that many of those games are available and not too expensive on the internet. If you're going to get a Saturn, get an Action Replay Plus to go with it so you can play Japanese games. Don't worry about not being able to read Japanese; many of the best games don't have much text. They are fighting games like Marvel Super Heroes vs Street Fighter, Pocket Fighter, and Vampire Savior. There are also a great many Japanese space-shooting games available. Of course, there are plenty of USA titles you can buy for the Saturn, such as Virtua Fighter, Sonic Jam, and Resident Evil. The Saturn also has an amazing variety of controllers and accessories for having been around only a short time. I recommend picking up an arcade stick for it, as they are pretty cheap and well-built.Read full review
I wasn't even aware of this system's existence until recently. Apparently it sold very poorly compared to its competitors. Well when I saw that one of my favorite arcade games was available for it, I decided to get one. I'm more than pleased with this system. Works like a charm, far better than most recent systems I've played. This system was obviously built to last and the only thing I needed to do was replace the battery(a simple watch battery that costs no more than 4 bucks.) On the games that utilize the system fully, the graphics are simply stunning for their time. Load times are fast (way better than any Xbox or Playstation), and the controllers are probably the most comfortable I've ever used. It even functions as a media player for your audio and video cds. As for game selection, I think this is the definitive home arcade machine. Whether you like fighters, racing, or light gun shooters, this system has all the classics. There's also some nice originals for it such as Night Into Dreams and Panzer Dragoon. Pick one up immediately!Read full review
The Saturn's failure was widely misunderstood. Sega originally planned on making a console less powerful than it's model 1 hardware(virtua fighter, virtua racing) when sony announced the specs for the PSone. Panicking sega then changed the specs for their next gen machine very quickly and as a result the development to tools were incomplete and buggy.( the Saturn is a less powerful version of sega's model 2) Making it more difficult to develop for sega made the horrible decision to use a main processor and GPU that worked INDEPENDENTLY from one another. In every other PC and console ever made the GPU works under the main processor. All this resulted in the Saturn being a nightmare to develop 3D games for and would result in 3rd parties dropping the system when the N64 proved to be more fertile ground.( however the 64 would prove to be fairly inhospitable to the sales of 3rd party games.[as the gamecube and wii were as well]) What does all this mean: well pretty much the only good 3D games were developed by Sega themselves. Yet I still love the saturn, why you may ask? Because of all the great 2D games released for it and Sega's bold decision to look to franchises instead of flogging newer versions of the same thing over and over( I'm looking at you Nintendo) Unfortunately several of the best games don't have the ability to save and some of the best games are ridiculously expensive.( radiant silvergun, panzer dragoon saga, guardian heroes)Read full review
For those who aren't familiar with the Sega Saturn, this is one of the most underrated game systems of all time. Many of the games are exclusive only to this system and you will not find emulations (e.g. Panzer Dragoon Saga) because of its complicated hardware. Make sure to pick up a cartridge that enables you to play Japanese games because some of the very best games were only released in Japan (Radiant Silvergun). If you are a fan of 2d fighters (Marvel vs Street Fighter) and shmups (Cotton Boomerang) and you have the Sega arcade stick, there is no better system on the planet.

I was extremely pleased when the Saturn arrived, however when I opened the box it appeared the mail carrier had ignored the "Fragile" warning written on the box. The power button had been broken off and some of the side paneling was also smashed, but the game system still worked. It was great to jump right into some Virtua Fighter 2 again and I'm happy to say that both my boyfriend and I are glad to have another retro gaming system in the household.

The Sega Saturn is one of my favorite game consoles (and my favorite Sega system). So many under-appreciated classics on this console, both from the arcade (Virtua Fighter 2, Daytona USA, Virtual-On, Virtua Cop) and exclusive to the system itself (NiGHTS into Dreams, Burning Rangers, the Panzer Dragoon series). Japan-only titles make the console even better, since they have a number of solid exclusives and arcade-perfect ports (plenty of Capcom and SNK fighters to choose from). It is getting more expensive to collect for in the US, so I recommend picking one up when you get the chance. Also get an Action Replay Plus cartridge, that's your only way to play imports on a US console.

Original games, cool ideas, and great controllers are just some of the reasons to own a Sega Saturn. Sega's corporate high ups always seem ta have problems...but their game designers and programmer were firing on all cylinders with the games produced on the Saturn.

First Sega console I actually own *I have played a lot of genesis in the past though* and honestly it holds up very well. Still one of the best consoles ever released in my opinion, the only down side is that the games are very expensive and rare. I would recommend Saturn Bomberman, great game that is exclusive to Saturn, if you decide to get one.
