We'd bought this Godfather series because they were DVD....we had one on VHS already, but wanted to see the 'extras' that come with DVD's... We'd learned a LOT about how they made the Godfather movies, and recommend that you watch the extras on the DVD's... Being a full blooded Italian, our family has always loved The (original) Godfather movie.. BUT.... In Godfather II, the way that the plot goes BACK and FORTH in time changes is AWFUL!! We had to keep trying to keep each other accurate of where we were in time as we watched the movie. They'd jump from when VITO was a boy, to when MICHAEL was a boy, and then back to CURRENT time, and over and over, and here and there and then.....blah, blah, blah.... I'd have to watch it mulitple times to start enjoying it, as it would take that long to put it all together in my mind--maybe we're just slow! It was SO dissapointing... I feel that they could have had a much smoother way of making it, as the plot was good, but just choppy. I think that they somewhat redeemed themselves with Godfather III but would have sacrificed that one for a much better Godfather II... We feel the first Godfather movie is heads and tails above the other two. Hope this helps! I edited my rating from excellent to good because of the Godfather II's dissapointment.Read full review
This is an offer you can't refuse. The greatest film saga ever is here in DVD colecction. I rate "The Godfather" 10 out of 10-great cast, great screenplay-killer one-liners (and long liners), Coppola's directing shines as does Al Pacino, Marlon Brando, James Caan, Robert Duvall, Richard Castellano, Diane Keaton, and many more in the classic epic. I rate the sequel "The Godfather: Part Two" 9/10. It was pretty good, but the first one is still the best. Good directing, it really does lead up a lot to the first movie. Al Pacino leads the cast which includes Robert Duvall, Diane Keaton, Lee Strasberg, Michael V. Gazzo, John Cazale, Talia Shire, and in his Oscar* winning performance as Vito Corleone-Robert De Niro. Great screenplay with many more classic lines, sucj as "ROCCO, ALIVE!", "You broke my heart, Fredo", and "Keep you friends close, but your enemies closer". Then there was "The Godfather: Part Three"-all I can say is the more sequels, the worse the films get. I rate Part 3 7/10, it just didn't have the mix of the first 2, due to the fact that (for various reasons) many characters from the first two weren't in it. Directing-pretty good-acting-good-screenplay-ok. Stars Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Talia Shore, Andy Garcia, Eli Wallach, and Joe Mantegna. In all, this is a great film series-Part One earned 11 Oscar nominations-including 3 Best Supporting Actor nominations, and it won 3, including Best Actor-Marlon Brando. Part Two earned 11 as well, winning 6, including Best Supporting Actor-Robert De Niro. Part Three was nominated for 7 Oscars. Excellent trilogy, worth buying-9/10 overall-sorry, i don't use a scale of 1 to 5. I prefer 1 to 10.Read full review

I watched these movies when they were in theaters. Still had me on edge of my seat. Many great actors in this collection. Marlon Brando, Al Pacino give outstanding performances of their characters as do all the actors. I believe these made the list, 1,001 movies you must see before you die.
