It's well researched, well interviewed, and written without frills. It doesn't need frills. Wreck diving is already on the edge, an extreme sport with virtually no margin for error. Drama is built in. Haberstroh does a nice job with these issues, the profiles of the five who died are effective, and he understands the sport without having dived himself, which is quite an accomplishment." -- National Geographic Adventure, It's well researched, well interviewed, and written without frills. • The Epitome of Adventure Diving

This is a very well written depiction of the sinking of the Andrea Doria and the adventures of the early pioneers of technical diving. The author brings to life the adventures of the people who lived to dive this great ship and the ones who died while doing so. It also puts on display the camaraderie of a relative small group of divers who went well beyond the limits of recreational diving, and for the most part, dove by their own rules. A truly great read!

  • Excellent book for nonfiction readers.

I like the book because it is historical nonfiction, which is my one of my favorite genres. The author's organization of the book is well laid out. Have been interested in the Andrea Doria since I was little. One time sailing back from Italy, the lounge room became hushed and it was pointed out that we were passing over the sunken ship. Also, my father sailed on the Cristoforo Columbo, the sister ship of the Andrea Doria.
