    Late Nineties Masterpiece

    I purchased the DSP-A1 to use purely as a power amplifier. My newer model RX-V481 just didn't have enough umpf to fill our 25' X 25' home theater room. The RX-V481 is a fine receiver, just lacking power for my room's needs. Using an Oppo BDP-203 as HDMI preamp/processor for my setup, the Oppo has 7.1 channel analog outputs, the DSP-A1 has performed flawlessly as the power amp. What is truly shocking is how well the system sounds when I switch to optical output from the Oppo into the Yamaha and activate the Yamaha DSP profiles, for Dolby Pro-Logic recordings it is lovely and the "movie theater" program really takes the show to new levels. More modern digital files are challenging for the DSP, and definitely no HD audio from Blu-ray discs, but hey it was built before DTS and Blu-ray were ...

    Heavy, built like a tank, all discrete circuits

    Good: great sound, lots of power Bad: half of front display is not working, after about a week of using it, it broke,,,does not even turn on anymore...I would not reccommend this only because this model is now quite old...came out in 1998...it was the flagship back then but now , not so much anymore...I know have to find a shop to see if they can figure out what is wrong with my unit...

    Digital Sound Procesing

    I have owned a Yamaha DSP 3000 since it came out. It is for music not for Movie Home Theater. If you enjoy Live music performances-Classical, jazz, rock, country--Yamaha corp went out of its way to reproduce the best acoustics. There are so many halls to choose from that it is bewildering. After a while you settle on a few and you adjust it to your taste. The effect has to be subtle, most noticeable when you turn the effect off. Properly done, you will never want to listen to stereo. My dsp3000 developed a hum from a cold solder connection. I will get it repaired, but I reviewed what was available and found the DSP A1 was the best one out there. I bought a DSP A1000 a few weeks earlier--in perfect condition--but it did not do. Both have 1st class amps. However, the real jewel is ...

    This model, known as Yamaha’s “10th Anniversary” edition since the introduction of the DSP-1 processor, is a big change in all of its predecessors. The first change, clearly visible, is the size. This beast, completely boxed weights over 100lbs. It succeeds the highly-regarded DSP-A3090 Soundfield Processing Amplifier, the first one to feature Dolby Digital. The Yamaha DSP-A1 would be the last model to be an integrated amplifier. The word “integrated” is used to describe a component which has a pre-amplifier and amplifier, but lacks a tuner.     Still one of the best

    I bought my A-1 a couple of years ago on e-bay. I had wanted one of these beauties since auditioning one in 98 at a high end audio store when i was living in San Diego. They had it hooked up to a 5.1 system of BW monitors and the sound was incredible. No matter the format at the time it performed so well with a noise floor incredibly low. I love to play with yamahas different modes with this at the time had the most out there. The thing i love about it is how well it plays both music and movies. I know compared with the newer models the formats on this beauty still provides top level sound and no noise. When i first heard this unit i wanted one for a long time and in its day with a almost 3000 price little rich for me but since i have one now its still playing at a high level of ...
