Synopsis
J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote: "I wisely started with a map, and made the story fit." The Maps of Middle-earth presents four of Tolkien's iconic maps, reimagined and newly updated for this edition by acclaimed Tolkien artist, John Howe, and richly decorated with scenes from the books: Middle-earth , a breath-taking panorama of all the locations from Hobbiton to Mordor that feature in The Lord of the Rings ; Wilderland , a charming evocation of the realm to which Bilbo journeyed 'there and back again' in The Hobbit ; Beleriand , a lyrical portrayal of the ancient landscape of the First Age, where the great tales of The Silmarillion took place; Númenor , an exclusive reproduction of the legendary island described in Unfinished Tales , which was sunk beneath the waves in the Second Age of Middle-earth. The maps are accompanied by an authoritative text written by Brian Sibley, which tells the stories behind The Hobbit , The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion , and gives accounts of how the original maps came into being. Filled with illustrations by John Howe, many of which appear here for the first time, the book also features gazetteers of all the names on each of the four maps. They provide revealing insights into the significant role each place-name played in the stories, including those of Númenor, the island-kingdom once inhabited by Elendil and his sons, Isildur and Anárion, ancestors of Aragorn, that was sunk in a cataclysmic storm following the treacherous deeds of Sauron, as told in Of the Rings of Power in The Silmarillion ., J.R.R. Between confusing my tracking information for another order (making me think my package had been delivered states away), my book having completely different cover art than the image used in the eBay listing, my book not being packed well and suffering some damage, as well as the other shady behavior listed in other reviews (like my book coming from Amazon and the seller immediately jacking up the price of the original listing after my purchase), I'd say this is a shady seller to entirely avoid.

Book was as described. Charged a lot for shipping and never gave any tracking information. Also, this book was sold to me before they had it in hand apparently. A packing slip for Amazon was found with a cheaper price and later date than when I bought the book.

It’s a great book, but this one I received was not in the condition it was advertised. When it arrived, a cheaper price tag was left on it for this reason but I was never refunded the original/ higher amount that I paid for a better quality book. Seller did not resolve. Very disappointed.

This is a beautiful set. The detail is excellent. Full color makes them that much more attractive. The book that comes with the maps giving details of the places on the maps is a real plus. The problem is you can buy Maps of Middle Earth by Karen Wynn Fonstad, having many more maps, and The Complete Guide to Middle Earth with infinitely more entries and better details for a combined price these days that is comparable to the price of this set. This sets main selling point is it is a visual feast. I have read the Trilogy several times. I own the DVDs of the movies. If you, or the person you are buying for, liked the movies better or never read the books, buy this set. If you read the books buy the combination of books I mentioned above.

  • Very attractive set of maps of Tolkien's Middle Earth

As a long-time Tolkien reader, I have always enjoyed the maps that accompanied the books. They have always been useful in helping to make visualization of Middle Earth in my mind more complete, more "real". When I saw this set being auctioned on eBay, I felt this might give me an opportunity to get an even more detailed version of these maps. The colorful presentation and bigger scale of these maps gives me a better perspective of the time and distances involved for the characters making their treks across this world as described in the books. I guess one could say that I can more easily lose myself in the adventures. And the sturdy case should keep them safe and preserved for years to come.

  • This is the best surprise/gift I have had in years.

I had not really looked at the picture or description but I have wanted more maps than I had and these turned out to be almost exactly what was missing in my collection as well as the volume of discussion and explanation was above and beyond what one would have expected. I have never purchased from this seller before and usually have to be very care of my sources and now I have a new seller I never need worry about. Thank you.
