Excellent book
What an excellent book. A complete journey into the thoughts and intelligence and imagination of Ambrose Bierce. The stories can be read over and over and are timeless. I actually saw a story on film in school when I was about 12 years of age and it was so profound that it stayed with me. 62 years of age now, I discover the story was written by Ambrose Bierce.' An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge' is also included in this wonderful book.

Great Anthology!
This anthology of Ambrose Bierce's short stories is an outstanding volume. Bierce was a prolific author whose work in under-appreciated by readers. In addition to the stories with war themes there are a number of interesting borderline horror and fantasy entries. Of course, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" is featured as is "Horseman in the Sky." Many thanks to purchase this excellent addition to my home library for a modest price. Sincerely, Andrew Gregg.

The Complete Short Stories of AMBROSE BIERCE His short stories are held among the best of the 19th century, providing a popular following based on his roots. He wrote realistically of the terrible things he had seen in the war in such stories as "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge", "The Boarded Window", "Killed at Resaca", and "Chickamauga". AMBROSE BIERCE went into the the Mexican Revolution in December 1913 and noone knows what happened to him .Bierce's disappearance has been a popular topic. Carlos Fuentes' novel The Old Gringo is a fictionalized account of Bierce's disappearance which was later adapted into the film Old Gringo (1989), starring Gregory Peck in the title role. Bierce's disappearance and trip to Mexico provide the background for the vampire horror film From Dusk till Dawn 3: The Hangman's Daughter (2000), in which Bierce's character plays a central role. . As he is one of my favorite writers I often wondered how he died.What happened to him? His end remains shrouded in mystery. His writings are of a genius. Author Alan Gullette argues that Bierce's war tales may be the best writing on war, outranking his contemporary Stephen Crane (author of The Red Badge of Courage) and even Ernest Hemingway. This book contains horror stories as well as Tall Tales & Civil War stories. Author Kurt Vonnegut once stated that he considered 'Occurrence at Owl Creek' the GREATEST AMERICAN short story, and a work of flawless American genius! I will include below some of Ambrose Bierce quotes: "War is God's way of teaching Americans geography" Ambrose Bierce "An account, mostly false, of events, mostly unimportant, which are brought about by rulers, mostly knaves, and soldiers, mostly fools" Ambrose Bierce "A coward is one who in a perilous emergency thinks with his legs" "Opiate. His writings of the Civil war is an eye opener to show us ALL wars in the end are exactly the same with the exact consequences . The only thing that cahnges is the style of weapons and the century. You can't do better than the complete short story works of Ambrose Bierce. A must for any scholarly researcher of Bierce, the Civil War, or that period of history in general. (Highly recommended by a retired teacher and published writer.)
