In 1965, 400 American troops faced an ambush by 2,000 enemy troops in the Ia Drang Valley (also known as the Valley of Death), in one of the most gruesome fights of the Vietnam War. WE WERE SOLDIERS is a detailed recreation of this true story: of the strategies, obstacles, and human cost faced by the troops that participated. The story focuses on the lieutenant colonel that led the attack, Hal Moore (Mel Gibson), and a civilian reporter who accompanied them, Joseph Galloway (Barry Pepper), as well as a number of other soldiers who were involved. This is an unusual Vietnam film in that it also shows the North Vietnamese perspective on the battle; their leader Lieutenant General Nguyen Huu An (Don Duong) is depicted as a brave soldier and smart commander. And in addition to the many gory battlefield sequences--which seem to have been influenced by SAVING PRIVATE RYAN--we also see how the carnage of war affects those left behind, the soldiers' wives and children. Ultimately this is a moving anti-war film, which, by sticking close to the true stories of real soldiers, very effectively brings home the overwhelming horror of war.

    A GOOD TRIBUTE TO OUR VIETNAM VETERANS

    While I am not a Mel Gibson fan (and hate the thought of a foreigner playing the leed role), I have to admit that this film is not just a great Vietnam War film, it is simply a great war film, period. It also manages to show the enemy in an appropriate light. For in order to have a great victory, you must have fought a worthy opponent. To this end, I thought the portrayal of the NVA commanding officer was an excellent touch. But for me, the hardest hitting moments were the letters being received by the wives of the recently fallen soldiers. While admittedly a bit hollywoodized, it was a great reminder of those families of soldiers, airmen and sailors who live in fear and dread every ringing of the phone or knocking of the door. A must see movie!!

    We Were Soldiers

    The acting is superb in this movie. The screenplay follows what occurred in the early days of the Vietnam war. Many other units were involved in this conflict but the writers did present most of them in action. The film has great visual effects and great action shots. The character development is actually quite good. Fans of Mel Gibson should appreciate his representation of the main character. The fear and anticipation that the military wives experienced in this movie portrays their emotions splendidly. Great movie, one that will take you on a ride of different emotions. This is even better in High Def.

    Great Movie even better on HD-DVD

    HD DVD is encoded in High Definition 1080p format. The movie its sharpness, and eye-popping colors are just stunning. Black levels are inky with excellent grey shadow detail, and contrasts are deep. The movie itself is great and if you are already a fan of the DVD the HD DVD is what you want. One problem with HD is that with the HD/Blu Ray debate some stores are not stocking them until there is a clear winner.     We Were Soldiers, Awesome HD Movie

    The picture quality jumps out at you thru my HD front projector. The DD audio completes the cinema at home experience. Its to bad HD-DVD lost the format war. Its all about the greed of hollywood otherwise more people would have had the same experience.
