English summary: Antiquity is rarely considered to be a period typified by massive use of time-measuring instruments. The latter are often viewed as perfunctory, uninventive, or even non-existent. This comprehensive work, which summarises for the first time all available data on the topic, also challenges many generally accepted ideas. Time-measuring instruments were an integral part of habits in antiquity: the hours of the day governed numerous aspects of people's private, as well as public, daily lives. Epigraphy and archaeology both attest to this particular need. Every city was expected to possess several public instruments -whether rudimentary or complex and monumental. Every property owner claiming even the slightest wealth had to have a sundial in his garden. These instruments, even more so than hydraulic clocks, constituted the basis of ancient "horology." French description: L'Antiquite est rarement regardee comme une periode d'utilisation massive des instruments de mesure du temps. Ces derniers sont meme souvent consideres comme sommaires, peu inventifs voire inexistants. Cet ouvrage fait, pour la premiere fois, la synthese des donnees sur le sujet et remet en cause les idees recues. Les instruments de mesure du temps faisaient partie integrante des habitudes antiques: l'heure regissait de nombreux aspects de la vie quotidienne, tant privee que publique. L'epigraphie comme l'archeologie attestent de ce besoin particulier. Toute cite se devait de posseder plusieurs instruments publics, rudimentaires ou complexes et monumentaux. Tout proprietaire un tant soit peu fortune devait disposer d'un cadran solaire dans son jardin. Ces instruments, plus que les horloges hydrauliques, constituaient la base de l'horlogerie antique. Avec de nombreuses typologies, le cadran solaire pouvait presenter des informations complexes.Outil astronomique, pedagogique a l'origine, il est rapidement devenu un simple outil d'usage quotidien, perdant peu a peu ses specificites scientifiques. En contrepartie, le cadran solaire s'est cependant charge d'une dimension symbolique forte et encore ancree dans nos mentalites modernes. Ce que nous devons a l'Antiquite en matiere de mesure du temps depasse peut-etre les simples questions technologiques habituelles.Jerome Bonnin est docteur en archeologie romaine de l'Universite de Lille 3. Il a soutenu sa these Horologia Romana, recherches archeologiques sur les instruments de mesure du temps a l'epoque romaine. Etude typologique, urbanistique et sociale en 2012 et poursuit ses recherches sur le theme de la mesure du temps et de ses implications sociales dans l'Antiquite. Il est l'auteur de nombreux articles sur le sujet.
