Peter Straub's Ghost Story
I bought this because I thought the title was cool. I had previously read one of Straub's short stories and was impressed by it. Therefore, I thought I'd give a full-length novel a shot. At 567 pages, it was way too long. Most of the characters were poorly developed and uninteresting to me. With the exception of a few well-written scenes, which created a nice eerie mood, most of the book was uninteresting. Many times, I had to re-read a section to try and understand the author's point or, even yet, figure out who was doing the talking! I will not be reading another of Straub's novels anytime soon. I plan to try another horror author such as Clegg or Simmons. A recommendation: a horror author I have enjoyed reading is Ramsey Campbell.I bought this because I thought the title was cool. Total frightfest!
I have loved the movie based on this book for years -- very chilling and creepy with an all-star cast. However, until a couple of weeks ago, I didn't even know the movie was based on a book. That piqued my interest so I had to read it and it was amazing. Although the movie follows one of the central plot lines of the book, there are numerous under-currents presented in the novel linking otherwise unrelated characters and events that make it hard to put the book down once you've started it. It is well written and even though it tends to jump around a bit from past to present and character to character, I did not find it confusing or difficult to follow. And, it will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat! A great read if you like to be frightened and reminded me of the style of ...
