  • Neurosis - Given To The Rising - Music We Like ! !

Oakland’s post-metal overlords created a whole scene of violent, emotional, futuristic stoner-metal with their early landmark Through Silver In Blood. Their live shows are still unmatched after all these years for sheer pitch-black intensity, though their many progeny (Isis, Mastodon) attempt to pay worthy tribute. After a recent detour into subtler, more intricate emotional territory (A Sun That Never Sets, and 2004’s masterpiece Through the Eye of Every Storm), Neurosis is back on the warpath with a new album of shattering, nightmarish psychic intensity. It’s a return to their original heaviosity, a burning catharsis that lets us all rise above the mundanity and cruelty of daily life. The original masters are back!

  • One of the best Neurosis has to offer

I have not listened to Neurosis since after "Times of Grace," when their sound became different and a bit more tribal and meandering. That all changed when I saw them at the Scion Rock Fest and was amazed at what they were doing on stage in front of an awesome series of background video montages! I knew I had to check this album out and am glad I did! It is as good as Neurosis gets, especially if you have been a longtime fan of the band. Too arty to be stoner-rock, too stoner-rock to be arty--it carves its way into sonic territory that is experimental, introspective and powerful in every moment. Hearing an album like this makes me enthusiastic about the next generation of kids Neurosis will influence!
