  • Best Thing Afloat

Mr. Chapelle's book is a delight. Whether one is landlubber or seasoned sailor, historian or mere casual reader, this book has much to offer. There is nothing like a summer's day on the water's edge hanging around wooden boats, new or old. I only wish my shelves held more books. I'd get a second copy.

  • The Necessary reference...

Howard Chapelle is the dean of American boatbuilding reference writers. His efforts comprise the history, measurement and lines from actual hulls, and descriptions of carpentry methods for building wooden hulls and features such as hatches, keels, and spars. Boatbuilding details all the latter. It is worth a great deal as it is perhaps the most concise reference one can find for traditional methods.
