The item works as described. There are no instructions included in the box. There is a tiny ON/OFF switch in the battery compartment that must be turned on first before it will work. With all that said, it does work well; it's preset for the proper open/close light levels. The materials are all plastic so there is no doubt in my mind that a raccoon could rip it open after some hard work... a metal door would be great, but for the price it's a good deal.
