Story of the World makes learning world history fun!
Susan Wise Bauer did a fantastic job writing about world history in Story of the World (SOTW). We are a homeschooling family with girls ages 5 & 8. We use it to learn the basic chronological history of the world and the major occurrences around the globe. Bauer makes things interesting with a writing style that is very conversational and yet informative. My neighbors who have kids in the public school system have borrowed them and love to use it to help "flesh out" and bring to life some of what they learn in school. This was also one of the most succinct and non-political overviews of the start and spread of Islam in Europe and Asia that I have ever heard so that the big concepts and ideas are taught without trying to be PC or indoctrinating. The voice on this particular SOTW (Volume 2) ... Susan Wise Bauer did a fantastic job writing about world history in Story of the World (SOTW). We are a homeschooling family with girls ages 5 & 8. The voice on this particular SOTW (Volume 2) audio book is male and although a little odd and slow at first, he adds character quality voices to some of the dialogue which makes it interesting for children and adults and you soon find yourself drawn in. The audio production is fairly good as well so that you don't find yourself turning up or turning down the volume in certain parts. This is an all-around great product, even better in audio book form so that you can listen to it on long trips (it's over 9 hours of listening) or before they go to bed at night in their room. There are 4 Story of the World books and I've bought all 4 on audio.

Excellent "Spine" to Introduce History for grades k - 4
As the title suggests, this book gives a great overview of many major events of history. It is written in a story like fashion, which keeps the childrens interest. It is not a complete history, however, for youngsters, it can be used to "get their feet wet" since, at this age, children need to learn that history is fun and interesting, not just a bunch of boring facts. This is a great addition to our homeschool library, and can also be adapted to use with older grades if necessary. To add a visual effect to what is being taught, adding a few encyclopedias such as Usborne Book of World History, etc. brings the stories to life -- additionally, there are some web-sites out there that correspond to SOTW series books that allow you to create lapbooks for free along with free time-line type ... Story of the World Audio CDs
I purchased it because my children love Jim Weiss - and they love history. The very beginning (introductory material) is pretty dry but then the STORY begins. If your children are not into audio books, or only like fully dramatized audiobooks, then this is not for them. My children find history very interesting when presented in this way - they hate social studies in school but this is "cool." :) This was intended as a supplement to a history curriculum but works well as a standalone "read aloud story" CD.I purchased it because my children love Jim Weiss - and they love history.
