Timeless, chaste romance
With or without music, the based-on-a-true-story of Anna and the King of Siam (Thailand) remains a timeless romance. There is mutual respect and even love between the King and his children's tutor, even though they come from different cultures. In real life, not every attraction ends with sex or even a kiss; this may be a bit unsatisfying for the viewer, but it's realistic. Sometimes, love DOESN'T conquer all. Maybe it's the wrong time, the wrong place...or the guy already has twelve wives! Yul Brynner is a tough act to follow, since his performance defines King Mongkut as indelibly as Leonard Nimoy defines Spock. Wisely, Chow Yun-Fat doesn't shave his head or otherwise attempt to imitate Brynner. Once you get past the idea of a King with hair, Yun-Fat's King is every bit as noble ... Tasteful, elegant love story based on history. It's a "private collection must have" for me; love the actors, costumes, cultural insights, & beautiful scenery. It's an amazing movie revealing how love is like music in that it can break down all apparent barriers that exist between people on this earth.
