About this product
Product Information
Derek Ponting was born on 28th March 1945 in Liverpool, England. At the age of 19 he decided to build a new life in Australia, and emigrated in February 1965, in the hope of making his fortune. However, upon his arrival in Melbourne he was surprised to learn that the Australian Government had just introduced conscription into the armed forces for all 20 year olds, which also applied to British subjects entering the country. After living in Australia for 6 months he was requested to attend a medical examination and was subsequently drafted into the Australian Army. He saw active service in Vietnam and received shrapnel wounds when he walked into a booby trap. He spent a month recovering from his injuries in an American Military hospital in Vung Tau, Vietnam, before returning to his unit. At the end of his tour of duty in Vietnam he returned safely to Australia and three months later he returned to Liverpool. These recollections and memories are brought to you by the recent discovery of letters that he sent home to his Mother, which had lain forgotten for over 40 years. His story tells us of the sadness, joy and humour of war. It's t about military strategy or a blow by blow account of the Vietnam War, it's just one young man with his mates, in a war zone, trying to stay alive.

Item was just as described (near new) and I had excellent communication with this seller. The item arrived much sooner than expected, which was a nice surprise. The only downside was the item could have been packaged better as the packaging was torn in places, exposing the the dust jacket of the book when I received it. Overall, a positive transaction.
