I always liked Car Wash (1976) but had only ever seen it when it was broadcast on TV, never on the silver screen or home recording. An e-Bay Seller offered a good VHS copy at a bargain price and sicne I was thinking of this movie, I picked it up. While I enjoyed seeing it again (I used to live a couple of miles from the car wash used in the movie and would pass it to and from my way to work and home) I have to say I was a bit disappointed that this home version was different from the one used on TV. Though two characters played by Brooke Adams and Danny Devito are pictured on the cover (under a prominent picture of comdedian Richard Pryor in his role as "Daddy Rich") their scenes are left out entirely! Another key scene involving the charcter played by Melanie Mayron is also omitted changing the tone of her story and it is unfortunate. Still, it is a time-capsule of the 70's, much like American Graffiti (1973) was of the early 60's and a valuable record at that of what was important to people. The characters all see themselves as one thing, but, in the end we see who they really are. A good movie, not great, just good. If interested, wait a bit and see if a DVD version would be released that includes the omitted scenes. Othereise be sure and catch it when it is shown on TV.Read full review
