About this product

Product Information

GIGANTIC: A TALE OF TWO JOHNS, about the quirky rock group They Might Be Giants, profiles leaders John Linnell and John Flansburgh who are a success story in and of themselves. Childhood friends from Lincoln, Massachusetts who moved to Brooklyn, New York and began working collaboratively in the early 1980s, the Johns have spent their careers locked into a strong, productive friendship. The duo's roots lie in a combination of punk and new wave, inspiring them to write clever songs with pop beats and introspective, often-sad lyrics. Archival concert footage shows the Johns in their early days on the performance art scene in the East Village, where they pulled off such gimmicks as "Lie Still, Little Bottle" during which Flansburgh pounds the stage with a microphone attached to a large stick. Raw and inventive MTV videos for "Don't Let's Start" and "Ana Ng" are a reminder of the exciting emergence of 80s music-television overnight stardom. And the Dial-A-Song concept, which allowed fans to call an answering machine and hear a constantly changing off-the-cuff TMBG song, shows the fundamentally experimental side of the band. While the most poignant moments come from the Johns candidly discussing their writing process and aspects of working together, interviews with NPR host Ira Glass and reporter Sarah Vowell express the delight that TMBG fans find in the band's smart, funny, accessible songs. In addition, celebrities such as Janeane Garofalo and Andy Richter give interpretive readings of TMGB lyrics. Eventually the film turns to the recording of their album NO! in 2001, having spanned 20 years of TMGB history.

  • A Must See

I am a Huge They Might Be Giants Fan, so when I found out this movie existed, I had to have it. The day it arrived I watched it two times. It was put together really well and had a killer soundtrack. The special features on the dvd are as entertaining as the film itself. My personal favorite is a video of their performance of "Birdhouse I Your Soul" on the Tonight Show. It is among the few movies I have watched through with the commentary, which is also great. It's not rated, but it is acceptable for all ages, just tell your kids to cover their ears every time Jamie Kitman comes on screen. I may have a bias because I like the band so much, but I have shared the movie with a couple of my friends who don't really listen to TMBG, and the really enjoyed it as well. If you are a big fan ...

  • Promotional Film?

I didn’t hate it. I was hoping for more of an in-depth history and more early footage rather than current at the time concert footage. The constant switching between interviews and live footage grew more and more irritating. But I like TMBG so I would still recommend for fans or anyone unfamiliar, but curious about the band.

  • They Might Be Giants are an unheralded treasure!

This DVD is essential viewing for any They Might Be Giants fan. It is also an excellent jumping on point for new fans. The performances and music videos included in the documentary encompass most of the classic TMBG albums and the interviews are consistently engaging and serve to illustrate what incredible personalities these guys have. If there was a rating higher than five stars, I would award this disc that rating!
