About this product

Product Information

As the third release of a well-established series in Japan, Front Mission 3 is a turn-based strategy/RPG outlining the agony of war and the art of betrayal. While the focus of the overlaying storyline may be the rebellion side of things, the game has a Double Scenario feature that allows players to play two dynamically different sides throughout the duration of play. While one scenario would have you defend the Kamariya Junction, the other would have you destroy it. Scenarios change depending on your actions and the choices you make.

Front Mission 3 features a complex battle system broken into Battle Skills, a Discharge Battle, and the Battle Ranking. The 100 Battle Skills are specialized Wanzer actions that increase a character's performance in any given battle. Featuring customizable legs, arms, and body parts, the robots will learn new combinations and attacks upon upgrade. For example, if you've got a Tiandong 3 arm part, the Wanzer will learn an Eject Punch. Customization is excruciatingly important as players will need to upgrade a Wanzer's armor capabilities, supply it with progressively destructive weapons, and tack on special items for Battle Skill programming. There are 32 different robots to control throughout the duration of gameplay.

The Discharge Battle System allows players to acquire an enemy Wanzer by overthrowing the pilot and assimilating the machine. Strong attacks usually get the job done; the already mentioned Eject Punch is highly effective. Be careful, though -- enemies can eject your character and steal their highly customized Wanzer too. Play smart and defend your robots and characters by any means necessary.

Players are shown an evaluation at the end of each battle called the Battle Ranking. It relays important information on the total number of attacks initiated, how many enemies were eliminated, and the number of turns it took to finish the battle. These factors will determine your reward; ranging from bronze to platinum, players are awarded various metals for significant accomplishments. The Battle Ranking also affects the amount of money handed to you at the end of a campaign. Upon completion of Front Mission 3, players are treated to a summary that displays accomplishments and awarded medals.

Front Mission 3 promises over 150 hours of gameplay with the Double Scenario. Furthering the storyline at important times, there are tons of in-game and polygon-rendered movie sequences combined with CG cinematics. It also supports the Dual Shock Analog Controller for analog controls and the vibration function.

Great game but could have been better

Its a great game all around so I will just list its two main problems. Battle size- way too small for good tactical depth. You can only bring 4 heroes on a mission which really limits the tactics you can use. Difficulty- A little too easy, I usually finish a mission with all mechs standing. A well dont game with only a couple flaws.

  • Front Mission 3: Good, but not great

Exactly what I was looking for in terms of gameplay, but the storyline and character motivations (especially the motivations) are a bit stupid. If you've played Front Mission 4 (for the PS2) then you've pretty much got FM3 down. Turn-based tactical mech combat, with upgradeable parts, weapons and abilities. Some of the specific mechanics are different (no Linking, but abiliites can combo, allowing extra attacks for free). Even the basic weapon types are mostly the same (a flamethrower instead of a bazooka). Out of battle gameplay is basically menu navigation. There are some nice pre-rendered backgrounds during conversation, and an interesting Internet-type system, to help explain the story. I've also noted that the story can change depending on how you finish a battle, with slight ...

  • A fun game with a lot of replay value.

The game is actually two games in one, with a choice early in the game determining the direction of the story so there is a lot of replay value there, not to mention being able to mix and match the parts for your machines, so even choosing the same path could result in a different play experience.

  • One of Square's Best for 99

First, I'd like to clear some odd misunderstanding amongst the rest of the reviews. This game isn't 40-50 hours... maby if you do nothing but button mash through dialogue and don't do anything extra that may be the length of a single scenario. The game is approximately 150 hour long on average, which can actually get monotonous, and probably the only downfall. Story wise, the game is similar to a large scifi novel. The plot is slightly cliche, but the first time through on either scenario has plenty of twists and turns. graphics lately mean nothing, especially on these older games http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t261/RojinPC/FrontMission3ScreenShotenhanced2.png that is a good example of the graphics enherantly programmed into the disc, however the playstation can only handle a ...

  • Strategy RPG Classic

Well balanced and compelling gameplay. Lots of customization options. Amazing maps. Two games in one: two entirely different campaigns, both with great story and writing. Dates graphics, but outstanding sound and art direction. "Virtual Internet" feature, full of secrets and codes to discover, and fleshes out the story with details. A Masterpiece.
