About this product

Product Information

SUMMER OF SAM, Spike Lee's sizzling interpretation of the summer of 1977 in New York City, when thermometers shattered and a serial killer terrorized the city, focuses on an Italian-American community in the Bronx--specifically, Dionna (Mira Sorvino) and Vinny (John Leguizamo), a couple whose marriage is threatened by Vinny's obsession with other women. After Vinny returns home one night to find a killer has murdered two local women, he promises to mend his cheating ways, albeit unsuccessfully. As the media exploits the murders and a blackout threatens to unleash anarchy on the city, its inhabitants begin to look for a scapegoat who will release them from the reign of terror created by the chilling figure known only as the Son of Sam (Michael Badalucco). Lee's ambitious film does more than re-create the events that unfolded during the summer of 1977; in addition to being an entertaining time capsule, it also deals graphically with the concept of the mob mentality.

Summer of Sam intense but good

Not focusing on the insane David Berkowitz, Spike Lee tells the story of the crazy things that happen when New Yorkers must deal with a random serial killer and how mob mentality can turn neighbor upon neighbor. Think of Twilight Zones “Monsters on Mulberry St”, but true.

  • A great tale for emotion and worth your money.

I bought this movie because it had a very good storyline. Spike Lee is a visionary. For him to do this movie, was a big step. Though what he focuses on are the stories of several people living in 1977 New York. All of his work has culminated with this film. What tied this movie together is a all-star cast. You got John Leguizamo, Adrien Brody, Mira Sorvino, Jennifer Esposito, and a cameo with Spike Lee. This is like a "Do The Right Thing" prequel. The opening and closing scenes feature Jimmy Breslin, who was part of the summer of Sam story. You have funny moments, sad moments, scary moments. But I have to tell you. This story is in a way a big departure. To me this isn't the Spike Lee joint I am used to, but he still has the touch.

  • Summer of Sam

Based on true events during the sweltering summer of 1977, this movie sets the plot of the notorious killer Son of Sam in New York City as he sets the city on edge. A chance encounter with the homicidal maniac sends the life of a philandering Bronx hairdresser named Vinny (John Leguizamo) spinning out of control. As the authorities hunt the killer, Vinnys life unravels amid a haze of suspicion, drugs and promiscuity. The movie co-stars Mira Sorvino and Adrien Brody in a tense crime drama. The movie was directed by Spike Lee and has strong graphic violence in scenes as well as graphic sexual scenes that makes it most applicable to adult viewers only. However, if you like drama and crime suspense movies, chances are you will enjoy this one if not easily offended by those scenes.

  • Covered a very familiar time in my adult life

One of my hobbies is viewing movies and the more I watch the more discriminating my taste in films gets. That being said, I loved this film, especially the fact that it covered a period of my adult life.

  • Spike Lee's best film

And it was also Adrian Brody's breakout film. Co-written by Michael Imperioli who went on to star in The Soprano's. He also has a bit part
